Dental night guards

Is the science behind modern night guards real? I had braces 4 years ago and I’ve been trying to get a new night guard for weeks now. The ones from the dentists are hundreds of dollars, even over a thousand, at times. But the putty molds you can get from a custom lab for under 200 dollars are incredibly hard to get “perfectly right”, which they require to make the mold. I’m worried about my teeth shifting because they’ve always told me that is what will happen if I don’t wear my night guard. But is this just more false modern science? What was the purpose of braces in the first place, if my teeth will just go back to how they were without extra post-braces retainers or night guards?

Some dentists will put a permanent wire behind your teeth after braces. I dont like the idea of metal in my body if I can avoid it. I had braces for 7 years as a kid followed by 7 years of clear night guards. I was also told Id have to wear the retainers my whole life or my teeth would move back. After 7 years of night guards which cause a person to involuntarily bite down while sleeping and cause migraines, I got sick of the night guards and threw them in the trash.

For 10 years my teeth didnt move much but now they are going out of alignment again. It's not bothering me much so I dont want to do anything more about it. My teeth are so crowded, I can barely get floss between them. haha

How else can they pay back their dental school student loans, which as large as the debts of some 3rd world countries?

$20 at Walmart. Oral B is one of many good brands.
The plastic material used in modern bite guards is well engineered.

I’ve seen them for sale in chain drug stores. My nephew uses the disposable type, change once a week or so. He gets them online in packages of 12. I believe they need to be placed in hot water to soften, then you put it in your mouth and bite down to fit you. Let it cool and you’re good to go.

Its the cost of doing business.  You've already invested $8000 into braces.  Mouth guards are like maintenance.  They should last between 3-5 years.  If you don't wear them, your teeth will shift.  Just like a car, you don't HAVE to change the oil in your car every three thousand miles but choices have consequences.
