He received his ordination online through the popular Universal Life Church, which according to its website ordains, "ministers, priests, rabbis and clergy worldwide who are totally non-religious or even anti-religious."

This reminds me of one of the Ads I see often on Cathinfo. It is for a group of Jews and Rabbis who do not believe in God anymore, yet still have the trappings of religion.

Oh.  They are Episcopalians.

A close friend of mine (from my youth) basically admitted to the world that Catholicism was "too hard" so he gave it up.

(This young man was a traditional Catholic, too!)

On most occasions, he tries to say it's all a fable, etc. but you can tell he still believes -- he's just running away from Catholic morality.

Very, very sad.

I fled Him, down the nights and down the days;
I fled Him, down the arches of the years;
I fled Him, down the labyrinthine ways
Of my own mind; and in the mist of tears
I hid from Him, and under running laughter.
Up vistaed hopes I sped;
And shot, precipitated,
Adown Titanic glooms of chasmèd fears,
From those strong Feet that followed, followed after.
But with unhurrying chase,
And unperturbèd pace,
Deliberate speed, majestic instancy,
They beat-and a Voice beat
More instant than the Feet-
‘All things betray thee, who betrayest Me.’

One of my favorite poems.

I don't understand how he is mixed-race?

I don't understand how villifying people for an accident of birth that cannot be undone helps convert people.  One poster's son is mixed race and a priest.  There are more non-White Catholics that White, particularly in Latin America.

I would never criticize someone for being mixed race. As you said, they basically can't help it so one can't fault them for it.

There is another discussion going on about mixed-race and mixed-culture couples, but it's more on the COUPLES end -- those deciding to mix.

I re-read the article, and realized that it never stated the race of the mother. So I'm modifying this thread's title to be more accurate.

I thought the mother was a different race because of several hints in the article:

1. The idea that mother and father were very different (He's Hindu, she's Catholic, etc.)
2. The quote about "I was her blue-eyed altar boy"
3. The fact that his dad did a lot of travelling, "His father’s career moved the family from India to Taiwan and then to Hong Kong."

Let's just say it was a bit confusing.

But it doesn't change the point of the thread -- a case study of a mixed marriage (which means a marriage where both spouses have a different religion).

But we also have a case here of one way of life vs. another way of life -- two different cultures (hindu, Catholic) clashing, and neither winning out.

A very confused kid emerged, who became a "secular priest" whatever that is -- and is the most famous personage at a gathering known for hedonism and "hook-ups".
