19 year-old Carina Melchior woke up as doctors were about to harvest her organs.
Now she’s back at home cooking dinner with her family.

The world of organ donation in Denmark is in turmoil. A docuмentary was aired earlier this month which showed family members reacting in anguish to the news that their 19-year-old daughter was brain dead after a car accident, agreeing to donate her organs and allowing doctors to turn off her respirator. About 1.7 million viewers tuned in to the heart-rending drama.
But Carina Melchior did not die after her respirator was removed. She is now undergoing rehabilitation and may make a full recovery. About 500 people immediately removed their names from Denmark’s organ donor register.
Doctors at Aarhus University Hospital were embarrassed by the incident. “We are overjoyed that the young woman survived and that she is moving on after the accident,” Claus Thomsen, the hospital’s chief medical officer, said. “But we made a mistake underway and made the family believe that their daughter and sister would die.”
The hospital acknowledged that the question of organ donation should not have been raised as there were no unambiguous signs that brain death would occur. New guidelines have been introduced to ensure that relatives will only be approached about organ donation if no more treatment options are available. There was no risk of a false diagnosis of brain death, the hospital insisted.

Kim Melchior, the patient’s father, had this to say during an interview with Ekstra Bladet, a Danish newspaper:
“Those bandits in the white coats gave up too quickly because they wanted an organ donor.”

In Illinois you are automatically placed on the organ donors list when you get a driver’s license, unless you elect to opt out when you get your license and then with every renewal.
A bit scary when you realize that under Obamacare the quality physicians who are leaving medicine will be replaced by nurse practitioners and medical assistants who will be required to fill their quotas and they won’t be too concerned about the status of the ‘donor’.

When there is a suitable candidate for organ donation and a donation or consent to donate has not yet been given, procedures to preserve the decedent’s body for possible organ and tissue donation may be implemented under the authorization of the applicable organ procurement agency, at its own expense, prior to making a donation request pursuant to Section 5-25. If the organ procurement agency does not locate a person authorized to consent to donation or consent to donation is denied, then procedures to preserve the decedent’s body shall be ceased and no donation shall be made.
Illinois does NOT presume consent. Otherwise, they would NOT seek consent. All they are doing is preserving the option until it is clarified. If no consent is authorized…..no organs are donated.

But to the astonishment of staff at the Aarhus Hospital, in Denmark, the 19-year-old suddenly opened her eyes and started moving her legs. She is now making a good recovery at a rehabilitation centre and is able to walk, talk and even ride her horse Mathilde. Her family is now suing the hospital for damages, claiming that doctors had been desperate to harvest her body parts.
'Those bandits in white coats gave up too quickly because they wanted an organ donor,' her father Kim told the Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet. The family's lawyer Nils Fjeldberg said that Ms Melchior keeps asking if doctors were trying to k**ll her.
'Of course this is a great trauma, both for her and her parents who were convinced that there was nothing else that could be done and agreed to donate her organs,' he told the newspaper.
