Crusader with a checkbook: Anne Nicol gαylor helps women fund abortions

    August 22, 2010 7:25 am  •  By DOUG ERICKSON | derickson@madison.com | 608-252-6149

At all hours, strangers phone Anne Nicol gαylor's Madison home, always desperate.

The caller one recent morning was a middle-aged woman with a 14-year-old pregnant daughter.

"What clinic will she be using?" asked gαylor, 83, jotting down the response and the cost of a second-trimester abortion ($875).

"If we helped with $300, do you think you could find the rest?" gαylor asked.

After the call, gαylor opened a checkbook for the Women's Medical Fund, a Madison nonprofit that has helped pay for abortions for 34 years. gαylor has written every check for every abortion.

    This was No. 18,986.

    Controversial figure

gαylor is well-known for leading the Freedom From Religion Foundation in Madison for decades. Less known is her work with the Women's Medical Fund, which she co-founded in 1976, the same year she helped start the foundation.

The fund's sole purpose is to pay for abortions. Last year, it paid out $162,202, about 75 percent of which came from individual donors, the rest from foundations.

There is no office and no paid staff. gαylor, whose title is administrator, takes all of the calls — some 800 a year — at her dining room table on her home phone, the same one her four children and two granddaughters reach her on. There is no answering machine.

"It would burden anyone else to deal with all those calls," said her husband, Paul gαylor, 84, a former vice president for a building maintenance company. "But she listens to every woman and cares for every single one of them."

The phone number isn't widely circulated. Women get referred from clinics, doctors and nurses.

"When you give money away, people find you," said Anne Nicol gαylor, a petite woman with grayish-white hair and a soft voice.

    'All about the child'

The Supreme Court legalized abortion three years before the fund began, but many women simply couldn't afford the procedure, said Bob West, 82, of Madison, a professor emeritus of chemistry and co-founder of the fund with his wife, Margaret West, now deceased, and gαylor. The three had become friends through the Madison chapter of the group Zero Population Growth.

"For me, it was all about the child," he said. "In the kind of world I want to live in, all children would be wanted."

gαylor said her motivation came from a doctor who told her about a girl who was raped by her father and had to drop out of high school to raise the child. "Those kind of stories are so numerous and so tragic," gαylor said.

She sends out fundraising letters at least once a year, often tying the appeal to a significant event, such as Mother's Day.

"Of the 632 women the fund has helped so far this year, 147 were teenagers," gαylor wrote to donors last Thanksgiving. "Of these, nine were only 13 years old, and one, not yet a teen, was just 12!"

gαylor used the occasion of her 80th birthday to hold a fundraising party for the fund at the Madison home of Dr. Dennis Christensen, an abortion provider who has since retired. gαylor sent invitations far afield, including one to a well-to-do woman in California she'd never met but who had donated to the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

The woman sent her regrets and a $20,000 check.

    The other side

Anti-abortion activists have long been aware of the fund.

"It's a stark example of misguided compassion that serves as discrimination of the worst kind," said Peggy Hamill, state director of Pro-Life Wisconsin. "To finance extermination of pre-born children because those children would have been brought up poor is deplorable."

gαylor said no one is chasing down low-income pregnant woman. They're simply the ones who come to her. "If that's discrimination, so be it," she said. She thinks critics would view the fund differently if they heard the calls.

"We get calls, too," counters Sue Armacost, legislative director for Wisconsin Right to Life. "We understand how heartbreaking some situations are, but the answer is not urging and assisting a woman to destroy her child."

    Others call gαylor a hero.

"She's been on the front lines of two of the most contentious issues in our society, what I call the two A's — abortion and atheism," said Nora Cusack of Madison, a retired business owner and board treasurer of the Women's Medical Fund. "It's astonishing how fearless she is."

    A way with language

gαylor may look like Betty White, but her words still carry the socko punch that once led an audience member at the taping of a Philadelphia talk show to rush her from behind and put her in a chokehold.

On large families: "How presumptuous of someone to think the world is interested in a half-dozen or eight or 10 of their kids."

On anti-abortion activists: "They're religiously motivated, not intellectually motivated."

    On abortion: "A blessing."

gαylor said she has never had an abortion but once witnessed the procedure when a woman asked her to be in the room for support. It did not change her views, she said.

On the phone with strangers, gαylor is gentle but pointed in her questioning.

"The guy who got you pregnant, is he helping you pay?" she asked a 19-year-old woman from Sheboygan with two children and a third on the way.

"What will you do next time so this doesn't happen again?" she asked a 25-year-old woman from Madison.

    Looking ahead

The last three years have been tough on gαylor's health. A blood clot took the vision in her left eye, and she has an inflammatory disorder that causes muscle soreness and stiffness.

She retired from the presidency of the Freedom From Religion Foundation in 2004. It is now run by her daughter and son-in-law, Annie Laurie gαylor and Dan Barker.

The board of directors of the Women's Medical Fund has not discussed a succession plan, said West, who has been board president since its start. "It's something I probably need to talk to her about," he said, adding that he would defer to her wishes.

gαylor does not mention slowing down. "My regret is that we don't have $1 million a year to give away so that we could help more women," she said.

  • What a sad and sick person.

Religious studies and prayer is the height of intellect, and this neanderthal of a woman funds atheists and abortionists.

"Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels"...

  • My goal in life is to make 100 times as much money as this woman and fight against her cause; every single $1 she makes , I will put $100 against each of those dollars.

Thanks for this article, it lit a fire under my rear.

Ironically, she is the one who is intellectually challenged.

At 83 and failing health, time is quickly running out for her to repent and make amends, but let us pray for her conversion anyway. It will not go well for her, when she soon stands before the Great Judge.  He'll give her plenty of "freedom from religion'.
While I would never hope for another's damnation, I do trust that these people, if unrepentant at death, have a special place in hell.

You very well may be able to do so but, let's not forget, any money this despicable human is contributing is pennies compared to the stacks of $1000 bills provided by the government.

Over the years of the Bush administration, and W was ostensibly pro-life, it is reported that approx 2.1 billion dollars was funneled to abortion causes.  Who knows how much funds will be directed to pro-abortion causes under the Obama administration and future administrations.

A wretched woman is helping other wretched women kill defenseless babies in the womb.  Don't forget, the rancid souls calling this woman are looking for money to help fund their abortions, they aren't good girls being "misled".  Rancid souls intrinsically know who they really belong to and it isn't Our Lord.  Harsh words, yes, but true words.

I disagree with the rancid souls. Healthcare providers, authority figures, and society also pressure teens. Some will encounter more pressure than others. Many go in seeking care for pregnancy but are put under great psychological pressure to murder their child. We all know how people bully others to get them to do what they want.

We also have many more abortions from the pill and IUD, many are church going praying ladies. There is a huge focus on surgical abortions for some reason within the pro-life groups. Medicaid in every state pays for abortifacient drugs, they are actively pushed onto women, but there is no out cry about federal funds being used for that/nor is it excluded in Hyde.

Those are heinous practices, to be sure, but the subjective culpability for going to get a surgical abortion is greater.

Women who go to get an abortion know what they're doing.

Abortion/Contraception/Birth Control all linked. My jury is still out on Natural Family Planning. Actually, I am a critic of it.

Against NFP here, thats for sure.  Let God give you the number and blessings of children that He should , and not me. Let go and let God, as the Prots say.

It isn't just women, you guys.  Men who use condoms, or who buy them, or
who decide to go into a drug store with that in mind..   men who carry one
around in their wallet..   men who laugh at contraception jokes..   men who
turn on the TV or even the radio to hear a show they know will have such
jokes in it..   men who click on ads or emails when using an Internet
computer that take them to impure websites or articles that they know will
stir up their sense of impurity while they defend their actions by saying,
"It's ETERTAINMENT!"..   men in positions of authority who make foul and
ambiguous pronouncements about condom use by male prostitutes that
the media and the world immediately interpret as a new "freedom" and a
"progressive development"..   men who suggest that a woman should ask
her gynecologist for a prescription..   men who turn these thoughts over
and over and over again, in their minds  ---  God hath scattered these
proud men in the conceit of their heart (Lk i. 51), the thought of their heart
shall be revealed as the soul of Our Blessed Mother pierced with a sword
of sorrow (cf. Lk. ii. 35), these are men all of whose corruption shall
become as it were front page news for all the world to see, for "There is
nothing covered that shall not be revealed:  nor hidden that that shall not
be known" (Lk. xii. 2, cf. Mt. x. 26).

Quote from: Saint Paul, to the Romans,

11 ...For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual grace
    to strengthen you...

13 ...And I would not have you ignorant...

15 ...I am ready to preach the gospel to you also that are at Rome.

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel...

17 ...For the justice of God is revealed therein...

18 ...For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness
and injustice of those men that detain the truth of God in injustice...

21 ...Because that, when they knew God they have not glorified him as
God, or given thanks, but became vain in their thoughts, and their foolish
    heart was darkened.

22 For professing themselves wise they became fools.

23 And they changed the glory of the incorruptible God into the likeness
of the image of a corruptible man, and of birds, and of four-footed beasts,
    and of creeping things.

24 Wherefore God game them up to the desires of their heart, unto
uncleanness, to dishonour their own bodies among themselves.

25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie; and worshipped and served
the creature rather than the creator, who is blessed for ever.  Amen.

26 For this cause God delivered them up to shameful affections.  For their
women have changed the natural use into that use which is against
    nature.

27 And, in like manner, the men also, leaving the natural use of the
women, have burned in their lusts towards another, men... receiving in
themselves the recompense which was due to their error.

28 And as they liked not to have God in their knowledge, God delivered
them up to a reprobate sense, to do those things which are not
    convenient;

29 Being filled with all iniquity, malice, fornication, avarice, wickedness,
full of envy , murder, contention, deceit, malignity, whisperers.

30 Detractors, hateful to God, contumelious, proud, haughty, inventors
of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31 Foolish, dissolute, without affection, without fidelity, without mercy.

32 Who, having known the justice of God, did not understand that they
who do such things, are worthy of death; and not only they that do
them, but they also that consent to them that do them.

(St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans, caput i. 11..32)

He who readeth, let him understand...

This woman, Anne Nicol gαylor, and her collaborators, Annie Laurie gαylor,
Dan Barker et al., fit squarely under the Romans One Curse, for they would
not be ignorant, for the justice of God has been revealed (cf.v. 17), and they
know that the Church teaches that God forbids contraception (Humanae
    Vitae,
1967).   For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all
ungodliness and injustice of those men that detain the truth of God in
injustice (cf.v. 18), but why the Pope didn't quote that in Humanae Vitae is
probably because he  A)  was Paul VI, and  B)  didn't ask Padre Pio to write
it for him (instead of just asking him if he should promulgate it).

Their foolish heart was darkened (cf.v. 21).

Thinking they're smarter than the Church and smarter than God and
thereby professing themselves wise, they became fools (cf.v. 22).  And while
they run around in focus groups denouncing "substance abuse" in context of
"drug abuse resistance education," they turn around and practice it, because

    CONTRACEPTION IS "SUBSTANCE ABUSE"!

Their god is their comfort, their feel-good-ism.  They changed the glory of
the incorruptible God into the likeness of the image of a corruptible man,
and of all manner of things that man invents and develops in his chemical
laboratories to bring his offerings to the temple of the pharmaceutical
control industry to be offered for sacrifice via prescription from their
medical doctor, and in so doing consent to them that do these things
    (cf.v. 23 ... 32).

Wherefore God gave them up to the desires of their heart, whereby they
would feed their insatiable lust with the murder of their offspring
consequent thereof, unto uncleanness, to dishonour their own bodies
among themselves (cf.v. 24);  they who changed the truth of God into a lie,
and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, Who is
blessed for ever.  Amen (v. 25).

They would not be amongst them who overcame the beast of the
Apocalypse, but rather would succuмb to him.  They would not be
amongst those:  "...standing on the sea of glass having the harps of God,
and singing the canticle of Moses, the servant of God, and the canticle of
the Lamb, saying: Great and wonderful are thy works, O Lord God
Almighty:  just and true are thy ways, O King of ages.  Who shall not fear
thee, O Lord, and magnify thy name?  For thou only art holy : for all
nations shall come, and shall adore in they sight, because thy judgments
    are manifest" (Apoc.xv. 2-4).

And having succuмbed to the beast by the sinful desires of their heart,
for this cause God delivered them up to shameful affections.  For their
women have changed the natural use of marital fidelity and the marriage
bond into that use which is against nature:  contraception and abortion.
And, in like manner, the men also, leaving the natural use of the women,
the women even to whom they are married, but many are not married, and
many of the so-called marriages are not of God and are loathsome to Him,
these men have burned in their lusts towards another end, an end not of
God's will but of the will of man, therefore these men have received in
themselves the recompense which was due to their error (cf. Rom. i. 27).

And as they liked not to have God in their knowledge, God delivered them
up to a reprobate sense, to do those things which are not convenient for
the transmission of life according to God's will but according to the will of
man, in all filthiness of heart and contempt of truth and justice (cf.v. 28).

And being so delivered up to a reprobate sense by God, they are then
filled with all iniquity, by their disdain of Church doctrine, with all malice,
by their hatred of the pre-born, filled with all fornication, by their worship
of their own lust, filled with all avarice, by their desire to promote
abortions and contraception, filled with all wickedness, even so far as by
their literal dedication of aborted children to the devil, as their ancestors
sacrificed meats to the pagan gods.  "All the gods of the heathens are
    devils" (cf. Ps. xcv. 5).

They are filled with envy, as they crave to practice the impurities they see
others practice, filled with murder, as they actively devote themselves to
the promotion of abortions and contraception, filled with contention, as
they argue against anyone who disagrees with their abominations, filled
with deceit, as they try to trick confused mothers into having abortions
and using birth control, filled with malignity, as they pass around lies about
pro-life persons and groups, they become whisperers, as they tell each
other jokes and snicker out of earshot of co-workers who they know to be
    pro-life.

Being so delivered up to a reprobate sense by the Romans One Curse,
they become detractors, hateful to God, contumelious, proud, haughty,
inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents (minors can get abortions
without their parents' consent), foolish, dissolute, without affection, without
fidelity, without mercy.   They show no mercy to the children they kill in
cold blood, lying in wait, pre-meditated, with special circuмstances,
willful murder of the innocent:  a sin that cries to heaven for vengeance
    .

And so, delivered up to a reprobate sense and having known the justice of
God, they did not understand (since "abortion is legal"!) that they who
do such things, according to the infinitely perfect justice of God, would be
eligible for  capital punishment -- which would be for them a great mercy
and opportunity for repentance, so as to perhaps avoid the infinite and
perfect judgment of God in hell -- but instead, because they are Liberals
and due to their Modernist delusion and subjective error, they campaign
against the death penalty which would be their own salvation, there by
shooting themselves in the foot, and they don't even know they've been
    shot.

And not only is it they that do these things who are subject to God's eternal
punishments, but so too are those who consent to them that do them.

  • Could you imagine being in her family?!? How awful! And distasteful, to boot! ( taking those calls during dinner time). "Hold on, dear, I have to help murder an unborn child...could you pass the potatoes?"
I know that I have awful sins to atone for, but I would hate to be that woman! She is in need of much prayer... Maybe someone can do a St Therese and make this woman their "Pranzini!"
(The notorious murderer that St Therese prayed for, and his conversion was obtained)

Unfortunately, these misguided individuals are running rampant in these times... Our Lady of Fatima, Ora Pro Nobis!

    Love,
