Matthew,
I'm curious why you started this thread? I've seen these things happening in the news more and more (like Jeffrey Dahmer), and really believe that satanic phenomenon are to blame in some cases (as opposed to rational explanations).
Remember how the possessed man of the Gospels was "naked" and obsessed with death? No cocaine there. He also had the habit of cutting himself with sharp objects. Well, I've heard two accounts from friends who were worried about someone in their family (both teens), who suddenly became compelled to cut themselves in that way. These accounts both followed other evil events in their lives, like hearing "evil voices." Several members of one family had seen "ink-black" forms in their home before the crisis. That's all "anecdote," but an internet search will show that it's a new and frightening trend among young people. Satanism seems to be at an all-time high among youth as well, and they love T.V. shows & books depicting unspeakable evil.
While I don't blame every crime on Satan, it's clear that Jesus Christ took exorcism very seriously. Therefore, I find it horribly disturbing that the "new" Catholic attitude is to totally ignore the need? In one less flamboyant exorcist's book, he frankly admits that bishops ignore the problem most of the time? I could find the book, if anyone cares. He's a "sincere" N.O. type.
On the other end, I had a friend who became a "secretary" to Malachi Martin (who was flamboyant). An obsession with him had much to do with her ultimate self-destruction. They did correspond, but when she was no longer wanted (which I could understand), she still made a "shrine" of sorts by displaying a photo he gave her-- and nothing else-- in her living-room. I never went back, but it wasn't "like her."
Obviously she had a problem, but when I read "Hostage To The Devil," it was so disturbing that I just destroyed it-- not because I disagree with exorcism, though! I couldn't stand the way in which it "got inside the demonic mind" in every disgusting detail. I feel the same about "getting inside the mind of a serial killer." In the end, that causes more evil. I don't "want to go there"-- if you get my drift! Who said,"He who studies evil is studied by evil?"
Anyway, I think your thread is important because it reminds us how seriously evil our culture has become.
