  • Court may force disabled Catholic woman to abort her child.  RENO, NV, November 1, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) – A disabled woman in Reno, Nevada, may soon be forced by court order to abort her child against her wishes, despite the objection of her parents.  A hearing is being held Thursday in Nevada’s 2nd District Court to hear testimony from medical experts in the case. Story from LifeSiteNews.com

This is a sad and sickening story about the corruption of our government, trampling of our Catholic faith and parental rights.  I once had the privilege of working with mentally disabled persons and one of the difficult situations for the clients and the society they lived in (because both were put at risk) was the idea that these people were capable of making their own moral decisions.  They were allowed birth control and given the idea they could do what they wanted with their bodies.  When the mind cannot grasp more than a six year old, it is a terrible thing to expose them to choices they have no business making.

  • I'm not sure about the use of the adjective 'Catholic' to describe her. Not that it justifies any sort of infanticide (nothing could do that) but I'm not sure we want to go out of our way to label her 'Catholic'

She was know to flee the house regularly to solicit sɛҳuąƖ partners.

    Haven't read the article but.....
Why would she be disqualified from being Catholic? Can you explain what you mean here? And what relevance has her Catholicity to the question. Isn't abortion forbidden for all of humanity according to the natural law?
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

This is my point exactly, her 'catholicity' is irrelevant. Catholics were (rightly) horrified at the forced abortion that made the news from China about a month(?) ago (only one of millions probably), and that Chinese woman wasn't Catholic, but we were still outraged.

This woman is being labelled 'Catholic' and I don't understand a)where lifesite got that info that she was Catholic and b)what does it have to do with anything.

Further, going out of our way to strenuously label her Catholic is dubious at least since it sounds like, from her circuмstances, she wasn't raised in a terribly Catholic home/environment and was turned over to a caregiver, given little to no moral oversight (how was she sneaking out for sex? Where'd she get the idea? Why was she so loosely monitored? Etc).

I just think she sounds like, at most, a nominally Catholic woman, not a near-saint disabled girl, but a poor disabled girl whp was left to be raised by wolves. Catholic by baptism perhaps, but by formation, probably not.

We need to make sure the label 'Catholic' means something.

  • I think there are things here that many people do not understand about very many mentally retarded individuals.  sɛҳuąƖ promiscuity is a HUGE problem for them.  In spite of their mental age, they still have hormones like everyone else.  Unfortunately they are incapable of understanding them, much less not acting on them.

My husband has worked A LOT with this population over the last 20 years.  It is a horrible reality with them.  These "homes" for mentally disabled are an absolute bed of filth and corruption.  The patients commonly engage in sɛҳuąƖ activity and the caretakers just call it "consensual."  Abortion is commonplace, as is birth control and sterilization.  Many times the parents or guardians give permission for all of these.

It was a common occurrence in the 1950s and 1960s to sterilize those institutionalized.

Add to this the case of fetal alcohol syndrome.  Most people who have this condition look fairly normal in appearance other than some odd ear placements or facial structure, but most don't look weird or unusual.

Also, truck stops are notorious for some skanky prostitution rings.  These truck drivers care little about a persons mental status, really.  They would just abuse this poor girl and think nothing about it.

This people really NEED a lot of care and close supervision.  Many people find it impossible to monitor them.  They are really subject to abuses because they just don't know any better.

So I completely understand how this happened.  It happens all the time.

Contrary to what  people believe, a closely monitored segregated hospital run by nuns would be the very best option for people in these circuмstances.  But we have let our "compassion" and "concern" overtake our ability to see things clearly.

  • Mom of 7, I think when they started calling the mentally retarded - mentally disabled it changed people's idea of what they are capable of.  The fact that this adult women needs a guardian should clue us in on her mental state.  And, as you said, the problem is in the brain, the adult body is still an adult body.

The facility I worked in housed men on one floor and women on another, which caused serious problems.  Also, it was located in an high-income area, and (I think) the waiting list was about 10 years or more, so it was considered one of the better homes.  Everyone tried very hard to keep an eye on the clients, but because of individual rights, equality, etc. they still had too much free time to pursue their own interest and get into trouble.

There are various reasons parents may look to these homes for their children.  Maybe there is no one else to care for them once the parents are too old or ill.  Maybe they didn't think it would be as difficult as they found it to be and need help.  Either way, the parents are Catholic and deserve to have their religious beliefs respected.

BTW, the high court determined the lower court was out of place with its request and gives it till Monday to justify itself.

Publicity sometimes helps, prayer always helps.

Mom of 7, the people your husband works with are very fortunate to have a Traditional Catholic Man working with them, I give your husband a lot of credit - it's not an easy field to work in for a long period of time.

Yes, the parents deserve to have their religious beliefs respected, of course.

I only mentioned this because I think people, even Catholics, are very judgmental about "how could this happen" or "they must not be that Catholic."  It bothers me tremendously.

My husband is amazing.  He does the best he can with trying to help, given the circuмstances he has to work within.

He is always going around checking resources that are made available for clients and scratching off those that are unCatholic, like Planned Parenthood.

  • This is an issue of child welfare or adult welfare system.
The system is out of control all over the world, where almost everything they do is rubber stamped and families are denied due process.

  • The latest update is the high court upheld the lower courts decision.  The parents are still working for an appeal.

BTW:  There is a very good article about violent pro-abortion protesters attacking the Cathedral of Buenos Aires but "were eventually repulsed to cheers of "Viva Cristo Rey!"

I've got an austitic son who is approaching puberty.  What does he suggest?  Any tips for parenting through this?
