Hello! This is my first post. I would enjoy reading about how Catholic homes were decorated in the past indoors for Christmas. I am a convert first to the N. O. then to tradition later.

There is such a tendency to overdecorate and with decorations that detract from the true meaning of Christmas, so I would love to have examples. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

We always decorated with religious symbols, ie. no Frosty or Rudolph, fat Santa Clauses, etc. Unlike the commercial world, our decorations did not go up until Dec. 23, the Infant not placed in the manger until Dec. 25. We left them out through Three Kings Day, then left out a few of Our Lady through Candlemas. Now, we’re old and our parents elderly, so we don’t decorate as much as formerly, but we always have the Nativity in a prominent place in the house.

As children we made our own decorations, usually out of brightly coloured crepe papers which we cut up and made into chains. Christmas cards, almost all with religious themes, we strung on strings across the room. We always had the Christmas crib and a tree. Nothing expensive. We would simply cut a branch from a tree.

Decorations should not detract from the meaning of Christmas, but enhance it. Yes, too much money is wasted on overdone decorations that detract.
