  • It seems to me that this smiley :rahrah: is inappropriate.  It is a caricature of a cheerleader.  Most cheerleaders dress in a provocative way which can put people in a near occasion of sin.  Even though the smiley in itself is not inappropriate it is designed to mimic cheerleading, which is sinful.  As a Catholic who closely and jealously guards my state of grace, I believe it is highly inappropriate for this forum.

  • Joe, it is cheerleaders' dress that's inappropriate, not cheerleading.  When I went to school, cheerleaders did not dress as they do now, therefore my vision of a cheerleader is different than yours.  Smiley is an appropriate cheerleader with nothing inappropriate.  ( I don't watch sports, I play sports).  We need to pick our battles with the world.  Smiley cheerleader on this forum shouldn't be one of them.  You're wasting your energy & time.

    Dear Joe,

If looking at the cheerleader smiley is an occasion of sin for you then why are you using it in your post?  Is this thread an occasion of sin for you too?  If so, I hope you don't come back here to post in it, because then by thinking about the cheerleader smiley, even if you don't look at it, you might be committing sin.

Some cheerleaders are male.  Do they give you thoughts too?  :furtive:

You're jealous you couldn't get the pretty cheerleader in high school aren't you?

Cheerleading is not sinful. Cheerleading is a sport, just like baseball, basketball, volleyball, football, etc. and sports are beneficial, not harmful. Yeah sure cheerleaders dress pretty skimpish nowadays but that has more to do with popular culture, not cheerleading as a sport.

Seriously?  this is your idea of an issue?  Life must be pretty problem free on your planet if you have time to police emoticons.

  • I agree with him. The smiley face does not appear to be wearing any clothes.
Peepel ought to refrain from using smileys that expose themselves lest it cause temptations against chastity.

  • Not trying to pile on, but since I started the last thread suggesting we get more standard smileys (the yellow ones instead of the larger blue ones), I feel compelled.

I am personally done with society taking good things (cheering, smiling, celebrating, etc) and making them into "Sodomite-only", or "inappropriate-only", things. No: we Catholics have PLENTY of reason to cheer, and to smile, and so forth. I know some people don't like emoticons, and you can turn off smilies in your settings, so you never see them! Yay! I would caution that given that the meaning of a post is often tempered with an emoticon so the intended meaning is clear, I'd think twice before turning them off.

Do we misuse them at times? Sure. But I don't imagine anyone here is trying to evoke feelings of lust in commenting something like:

We got new parishioners today!  :rahrah:

And so forth. But if they bother you, turn them off in settings, or avoid posters who use them prolifically. (HIDE button: nobody knows you've hidden them, and the posts are merely collapsed. You can undo HIDE, as well.)

I'll use this smiley to convey I mean well, but note, these blue smileys are still creepy to me:

St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • It's a good thing Matthew hasn't added a "woman wearing pants" smiley. The debate would be endless.
"This principle is most certain: The non-Christian cannot in any way be Pope. The reason for this is that he cannot be head of what he is not a member. Now, he who is not a Christian is not a member of the Church, and a manifest heretic is not a Christian, as is clearly taught by St. Cyprian, St. Athanasius, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and others. Therefore, the manifest heretic cannot be Pope." -- St. Robert Bellarmine

I don't wear pants but I'd use that one all the time. Hahaha!
