    • Here's is a movie clip from the movie "The Godfather", in which it shows how fathers  took care of their daughters in a Catholic country, Italy. It was the same in Spain and Latin America. THAT is how chaperoning and courting is done. It is all there, the fathers reaction to bad talk about his daughter, the ladies chaperoning. The daughter being kept distant from the courter till the family approves of him...… (It starts at the 2:37 mark)

    (P.S. - I do not endorse the movie itself for like all Hollywood movies, good things are used to attract and then poison is applied here and there. Rat poison is 99% nutritious food.)

    • Compare that chaperoning and courting process in the movie clip to what is done today by even trad parents. If they are lucky, the young man honks his horn in front of the house and the daughter runs out to the car. If they are not so lucky, the girl just goes in her car to his place, the parents don't even know who the person was. Maybe the daughter is living in another town and the parents then know nothing.

    There is no difference between doing nothing and what the parents are doing today.

    • Just curious, where is the "poison" in The Godfather?  True, it depicts bad guys doing bad things.  So does the Bible.  I regard it as one of the greatest movies ever made.

    I am all in favor of daughters being chaperoned when keeping company with men, at least at the outset.  Back in my "dating" days, I was only too eager to introduce myself, of my own initiative, to the girl's parents and family, to show that I was a decent man with honorable intentions.  In all honesty, I saw them as potential "allies" to help me in winning over their daughter.  More than once, I remained in the good graces of the parents long after the relationship with the daughter had gone sour.

    Off-topic I know but I'm really curious - why was the father so angry when he found out they were talking about his daughter? The men just said they saw her and that she was beautiful. They didn't speak about her disrespectfully or imply that anything had happened between them.

    • Because he assumed the girl was out giving looks to strange, dangerous men.  Which she was...  Also, because they showed up talking about hunting and about all of the beauties they saw walking around the town.  The man sits down to have some trash talk about women and finds out the subject is his daughter.  Michael’s two companions were not nearly as respectful as he was.  He said nothing.  The subject of women was not a topic he engaged in.

    On another note, I have long admired the degree of common sense I see in Italians with respect to the raising of children, and the roles of men and women in the family and in society.  Not that you see it as much these days, but they’re still doing better than other groups.

    Irish Americans, which is my stock, always seemed to have a great deal of piety.  Which now seems to have gone by the wayside.  But naturally pious people.  Not as commonsensical as Italians though with regard to the roles of sexes.

    • The weirdest thing...I did not grow up traditional catholic but when I found out about courtship I always remember this scene from The Godfather and I said that is how it should be done.
