  • Babe Ruth was born of parents who owned a bar in Baltimore.

Saying he was a delinquent they placed him in an orphanage ran by priests and brothers. For years Ruth was there and his mother never visited him once.

The priests and brothers taught him how to play baseball and encouraged him to have a baseball career.

Ruth's first team was with the Boston Red Sox. He was a pitcher and probably the best one at the time. He could also hit home runs. In order to become a hitter Ruth knew he would have to give up pitching, the Red Sox would not let him step down. The owner was going bankrupt and sold Ruth to the Yankees who wanted a batter. The rest is history.

Ruth was called racial slurs. He was called "N-----r lips" and N-----r. If you look a Ruth he looks like no white person I know, but he looks like every other black person I know. It was obvious that Ruth was a mulatto and may explain why his parents placed him in the orphanage and maybe why his mother never visited him.

Ruth had a very dark side too. He fathered his daughter out of wedlock then stole the infant from his mistress and gave it to his wife. The daughter only learned this when her mother confessed on her death bed. One player once related how Ruth urinated on him in the shower. Ruth could drink anyone under the table and then the next morning with no sleep go out and hit balls out of the park.

Babe Ruth saved baseball after the White Sox cheating scandal. His short coming are far outweighed by what he accomplished and the man he was. He was an inspiration and still remains one for an entire nation. Despite all his shortcomings his ambition showed millions of kids that you can make your dreams come true.

And yes, he was the greatest baseball player ever. Without the priests and brothers it never would have happened. Reminds me of the story of Mel Gibson whose acting career would have ended but a priest with a kind heart made it possible.

  • In the booklet "House Tops", from the Saint Benedict Center, did an issue on Babe Ruth.  There is  a point in Ruth's life where he is hospitalized and a young boy gives to Ruth a Miraculous Medal and he wears it every day til his dying day.

You can ask The Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary/St. Benedict Center for back issues.

  • You seem to have an unhealthy fascination with baseball.

    A fascination with baseball, maybe.

"Unhealthy"- that is a matter of opinion.

What's wrong with a fascination with baseball?  Would you say that of all sports fans?

Or don't you know any men, Dolores?  A lot of men, that's all they talk about.  There's reasons for that, one of them being that it promotes their mental health.  A supportive woman would understand that.  There are more important things to gripe about, if that's what you're bent on doing.

I heard that Ruth practiced pitching as a boy by throwing a ball through a tire swing.
    Is that true?

I wonder how Nestle got the rights to this name?

And did "The Babe" like peanuts, milk chocolate and caramel?

P.S.  What does the SSPX have in common with Nestle?

  • Crossbro,

If a prot made the threads about Bonds & Ruth, pointing out their Catholicism & moral shortcomings as you did, he would be insulting the Faith--I'm not sure that you're not doing that.

What's the point of these silly childish threads?

The candy bar is named after the daughter of President Glover Cleveland. Her name was Ruth Cleveland who died when she was 12.

Funny though, a rival candy bar maker did have a candy bar named after Babe Ruth- but the candy maker sued them because the names were too similar and won so naming another candy bar after Babe Ruth will never happen.
