Does anything believe there's a need for a new lay Catholic association in Ireland? I mean one which would not be primarily concerned with charity or piety, but on harnessing collective resources and talents. It seems to me that Catholics here are very badly organised in comparison to, say, the far-left (who have a multiplicity of groups and are always holding meetings). Such an organisation would, I propose, invite guest speakers, share experiences/gather reminiscences, attempt to work on the modern history of Irish Catholicism, organise theological study groups, publish a bulletin or magazine with notices, lectures or articles of interest, etc. Perhaps it's main function would be to serve as a kind of meeting point and allow other Catholics to develop helpful contacts. Does anyone see any use in such an idea and would you be interested if it was developed?

  • It's a good topic and something I am working on. Over the summer months, I hope to organise a few seminars and perhaps a summer school.

Two 'problems' I encountered in the past is (a) pro-life activism is the strongest in Ireland. To a degree other things have been ignored.
    (b) geographical location. With work, college, family it is never easy to get a place and time that suits. Sometimes after Mass or a pro-life vigil is only time people get to meet.

    These are 'good' problems.

  • I did set up the League of St. Michael the Archangel but it has been dormant. Perhaps it can be revived. Also a friend hopes to set up the Fr Denis Fahey Pro-Life Society.

A 'Young Ireland' claimed I was setting up a new pro-life group. Whilst Thought and Action has a pro-life wing and distributes leaflets on the issue of abortion, I wish to state there is no new group.

If the Fr Fahey Society is established, I would assume it would attract Trads. It's a work in progress.

  • What isn't needed is another prayer group or rosary group. There are plenty of those   and many associated with Medjugorje, Maria Divine Mercy and others. I am always wary of seers.

    John,

How about forming a TLM Legion of Mary (LOM) Praesidium?

This is a powerful and versatile apostolate.

I would say, more powerful than most other Catholic action groups because each member is consecrated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In the 1950s, Mao Tse Tung was quoted as saying he thought the Legion of Mary was the biggest threat that communist China faced, so he persecuted it fiercely.

The LOM can lead Pro-life actions, visit the convalescent, the poor and educate on many topics.

Several of the issues you want to address could be introduced using the LOM Book Barrow system.

Father Helmuts (The Hammer) Libietis used to head the SSPX LOM in the US.  He could give you some pointers for starting up.
