  • Cardinal Laszlo Paskai, the retired Archbishop of Budapest, died on August 17 at the age of 88 after a long illness.

Ordained in 1951 as a Franciscan priest, the future cardinal was named Bishop of Veszgrem, Hungary, in 1979, having previously served as apostolic administrator there. In 1982 he was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Kalocsa, but before succeeding to become head of that archdiocese, he was named by St. John Paul II to become Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest in 1987. He remained in that post until his retirement in 2002. He received his red hat from Pope John Paul II in 1988.

May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen.
