Some of my Church friends have come to the conclusion that paying for Mass stipends is simony and a sin. So they no longer have Masses said for people. I wonder if they will have even funeral Masses said for themselves.
I can see this being a bit fuzzy, and I don't entirely disagree. Technically the stipend is offer to help support the priest, who may not have any other means of support.
But this idea of selling Masses online for a fixed fee ... that to me crosses the line.
Just like for weddings and Baptisms, there should never be an up-front stipend, but it should nevertheless be customary. Where it gets blurry is when someone offers money up front to get the Mass said; it just smacks of simoniacal transaction. I think that the practice should separate the payment from the Mass. If I were a priest, I would not have any transaction tied to the request itself but would tell people that if they are able and wish to, to put some cash in the collection basket in an enveloped marked as stipend or for the personal support of the priest. That way people could also offer additional support for the priest in addition to stipends.
This is very similar to the perception, pre-Prot-Deformation, that indulgences were being sold.
