  • Has anyone heard about the so-called Brothers and Sisters of Penance of St. Francis?

    They say:

    Quote

The Brothers and Sisters of Penance of St. Francis is a private Association of the Catholic Church whose members strive to model their lives according to the Rule and Statutes of the Primitive Rule of the Third Order of St. Francis, which was written for lay people in 1221 at the request of St. Francis of Assisi.

Are they disposed towards tradition considering that they want to live by the Rule of 1221?
"Recent reforms have amply demonstrated that fresh changes in the liturgy could lead to nothing but complete bewilderment on the part of the faithful" Cardinal Alfredo Ottaviani

  • What is interesting is the fact that the Rule of 1221 is no longer used by the current Franciscan Third Order Secular.

So why some people decided to start a reformed group of Brothers and Sisters of Penance seems related to what happened to the Church post-Vatican II.

Sometimes things happen in history and the original idea becomes too complicated that it can be lost or just too confusing to follow.

These people are trying to recapture the original idea of St. Francis without the control and influence of clericalism that took over the Franciscan Order, but is thankfully getting back into proper perspective.

Anyone from Cathinfo has more information or is a member of BSP?

  • Looking over their website I would say they are NO because of the numerous references to "diocese(s)".

  • I am familiar with it as back when I was in the Novus Ordo 20 years ago I was among the founding group. We called it Stella Matutina. When I became a Traditionalist, I spoke with the founder about bringing it in line with Tradition, but he totally opposed it.  So sad because it really makes no sense at all to return to the Old Rule but cling to the New Church/Mass.
But one thing is necessary. Mary hath chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her.

    How sad.

So you confirm that they are a legitimate private association under the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, right?

And, albeit loosely attached, they can be considered as being part of the Franciscan Family.
