  • I'm looking for some books that are handy and practical for a homeowner. Think landscaping, gardening, decorating, etc.

One book I really enjoyed was "The Backyard Homestead" but it doesn't cover things like reclaiming overgrown land or how to choose curtains. I have a lot of work ahead!

Are you familiar with the Time-Life Home Repair and Improvement series from the sixties and seventies? They remain invaluable and very affordable guides to safe and practical restoration, repair, and general maintenance, both inside and outside the house.

Though long out of print, there are many hundreds of copies of full sets and individual volumes still very easily to be found. Start at eBay with this search: <time life books home repair>. You'll be amazed at how much material turns up, frequently in excellent condition. The books were beautifully and sturdily bound and designed for regular or even daily use, and as a result, they are still in high demand.

Thanks for the lead. We have access to an incredible used book store, I will start there!
