  • For those with large families, what are the blessings of large families that you would want someone who believes in small families or is on the fence to know?

This isn’t for me; I want a large family someday (still single at this point), and have since I was little.  This is to sell others on the idea; I want to write an ode to large families.

    Thanks!

  • I think st John vianney said something like, some women go to hell for not having then children they should have had.

I don't know if the interpretation of that is that God wants big families?

Think of all the rosaries with a big family

When they are old, they will have someone (probably several children) to take care of them. When people have 2-3 children, from what I see, normally the children grow up and move across the country and never talk to their parents again except on Thanksgiving and Christmas, and even then only over Skype. People who have a natural family size are almost always guaranteed to be supported in their declining years, usually by more than one of their children.

  • From my experience as a mom of 8 children, either a person is open and disposed to being generous with God’s will (or at least understanding) with regard to the number of children a family has or they are not.  If they are not, nothing you will say is likely to change their mind.  They will never agree with your having a large family because it is an affront to their way of life.

Aside from that though, one of the best things I love to see in my everyday life is my children happily playing together, laughing, and doing all the things that come naturally to good friends, but their best friends are their very own siblings 🥰.  Also, babies are always seen as a great gift from God.  One of my sons remarked that their best memories are of the first day when the newborn siblings are brought home for the first time.

  • Because it is God’s will for us to have large families.

    Genesis. 1
    26. And he said: Let us make man to our image and likeness: and let him have dominion over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and the beasts, and the whole earth, and every creeping creature that moveth upon the earth. [27] And God created man to his own image: to the image of God he created him: male and female he created them. [28] And God blessed them, saying: Increase and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it, and rule over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and all living creatures that move upon the earth
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

That's awesome! I am a 32 year old male, not married yet.

This is so true. As one who married at 35 and whose window of opportunity closed at 40, We were greatly blessed to have three children. But all three live far away.

Older children learn how to look after younger siblings, something a “pidgeon pair” will never learn.

My own parents had seven children and there was always one of us nearby in times of need.

The purpose of our life is to know, love, and serve God.  What we want should have no bearing on our actions. We cannot serve Him if we do not trust His will for every aspect of our lives, including children.

  • "Cheaper by the dozen...". The more children you have the more you can buy things in bulk and save in the long run.

Once you have several children they can help with chores and eventually supporting themselves and helping to teach younger siblings.  I remember helping my mother with homeschooling my youngest two siblings through 8th grade.  From the time I was  about 11 years old, she would leave me to watch my younger siblings and take the older siblings to sports and run errands.

By the time we were 10-12 we often put in  up to 8 hours of work a day helping out on the farm when we weren't doing school.  If you have a large family all the extra help adds up and you don't have to hire someone who has to pay for their own room and board elsewhere.

I know many families who have only one or two children and are constantly having to entertain them.  Once you have three or four children they usually start to entertain each other and you can sometimes get a little break here and there.  😅

I wonder what people with only six or seven children DO with all their free time?! :laugh1:

Sometimes God wants a smaller family, as perhaps some couples may have issues conceiving.  So that's the bottom line, conforming to God's will, and not so much the size of the family per se.

  • My wife and I count ourselves very fortunate to have 12 children (3-26) and 3 grandchildren.  I don't believe we're any more blessed than my sister who has 2 children.

Blessings and grace in the married state come from the openness of bringing forth the children God wills for each of our families.

My sister has had several miscarriages in her journey of motherhood.  Doctors told her she would never be able to have children...my sister and brother-in-law were devastated.  However, they always remained open to the possibility that God would bring forth life...lo and behold, they have 2 healthy boys.  They continue to remain open to God's will.

Patience, charity, prudence, love, faith...these are just some of the virtues we are afforded many opportunities to practice each day in our family.  There is no shortage of practicing and offering up some sort of sacrifice each day.

As married Catholics, if we remain open to God's will, and unite our will to His regarding the size of our families, we will be blessed no matter how many children we have.   Catholic families come in all shapes and sizes, but it's our openness to bring forth the children God sees fit to give us that matters most.

Seconded on this!  What a beautiful family you must have Sgt. Rock!  Everything you wrote was very edifying and spot on!

It is our hope and prayer that we may have a dozen children, but God's knows best. 😊

Any adult child who treats his elderly parents like this is a disgrace.  It doesn’t matter if he is an only child or has 15 siblings!
