  • Hello,
I was hoping to get suggestions from members on purchasing the best Traditional Catholic Bible for a wedding present. Would like it to be sturdy, heavy, and hardback with a family register included. True to the original translation and with no modernization. Thank you

  • Then you want this Bible.

I have the 1883 version, I think it weighs about 10 pounds. According to the website, this is an exact photographic reprint, which is the reason why I recommend it. If it is exact as they say, then it is definitely sturdy, heavy, and hardback with a family register included and is true to the original translation with no modernization.

It says: "Those who are not familiar with this indispensable Bible will be pleased to learn that it is an exact photographic reprint of the 1883 version originally published by Gately & Co., complete with extensive commentary by the Rev. Geo. Leo Haydock, from whom the Bible gets its name. Great care and countless hours have been spent scanning and cleaning up each and every one of the over 1780 pages as well as faithfully reproduce the glory and grandeur of the original hardbound cover. We pray we have given justice to this timeless masterpiece!"

If you're not familiar with the Haydock Bible, here is a link to show you the plentiful and Church approved, extensive commentaries throughout the whole Bible. A truly awesome wedding gift for sure.

  • Can't beat the old Challoner Douay-Rheims, the one that TAN Books sold for decades.

There are other Challoner versions available for purchase as well.

And of course, online there's www.drbo.org which I use all the time. It's great having search capability in a bible. I use that to find quotes ALL the time.

I don't know.  Somehow, I think giving a URL link as a wedding present might seem a bit...tacky.

The Haydock bible recommended above in some sections is 80% explanations by the Doctors and saints of the Church. No need to self interpret. There is none better.

  • The one I linked to is $20.00 cheaper and is the 1859 reprint.  Plus, shipping is free.

I think it is so neat that on the home page of drbo.org there is currently a Bishop Williamson sermon. It's a small world!

Please pray for the repose of my soul.
