  • I was speaking with a friend and she was wondering (and I as well) what the best form of government/economy would be given the modern amenities, tecnhology, transportation, and communications that we have today, as well as the fact that the world at large (despite that it shouldn't be this way) is not moral.  If the US had the opportunity to redo our government and economic system, what would be the best one to put in its place?  It seems that many times, when speaking of the best form of government, it is always spoken of in regards to a Catholic state (which is definitely something that should be thought of and considered), but considering that we don't have a Catholic state...  It is a great thing, a "should be" situation - and I *believe* it is disputed even still among Catholics what the best form of government/economy would be in a world that was predominantly Catholic.  But those are two considerations that I would appreciate other people's input on.  So, at the risk of being repetitive here's my questions:

    1. What is the best form of government and economy for our day and (immoral) age?
    2. What is the best form of government and economy for a Catholic society?

  • The best form of Government is a traditional Catholic monarchy that follows the principals of Catholic subsidiary and distributism.

  • That would be great on "Catholic Island," but right now (.) we aren't living in a Catholic society, what would be the best government for right now?

  • Trent, the best form of government is not a system that is constrained by time or place. The best form of Government is one that follows Catholic teaching, creates just catholic laws, and creates societal conditions that allow its citizens the best chance to go to heaven.

  • that is still a should be situation - and given that you can't superficially impose the (absolute) right goverment on a corrupt society, theoretically if one had to establish a govenment right now it would be entirely unreasonable to expect a Catholic monarchy based on distributist princples to work.  Whatever.  It was a purely hypothetical question that was only half answered.

  • Trent, I did not mean to sound insulting. I am sorry if I did. I am not sure I can answer your question the way you phrased it. I guess the answer would be one that is the least evil in an evil world. The evil society that allows the most to go to heaven and live moral lives would be my guess.

  • don't apologize - as others have pointed out on this forum I tend towards being overly sensitive - but yes :

that is exactly my question, what would the least evil government be considering that it wouldn't be one based on Catholicism?

  • I don't know how to quantify evil and decide which evil gov would be the least evil because I can point out many evils in communism and I can point out just as many evils in our current Us gov.
