Title: Best commentary on the epistles?
Post by: Birdie on July 05, 2025, 08:35:23 AM
I'd like to read the Epistles, but I find them daunting. What are your suggestions for a good commentary on them, specifically? I have the Haydock and the Catena Aurea. Are there others?

Check out Jesuit priest Cornelius a Lapide's commentaries on Scripture. Many Catholics say it's the best ever.

Which epistles, specifically?
Allo, O.P.'s (https://isidore.co/calibre/#panel=book_list&search=authors:%22%3DAllo%2C%20Ernest%20Bernard%2C%20O.P.%2C%201873-1945%22) or Cdl. MacRory's (https://isidore.co/calibre/#panel=book_details&book_id=8378) on Corinthians are the best.
Vosté, O.P. (https://isidore.co/calibre/#panel=book_details&book_id=8385) on Ephesians.
MacEvilly's on St. Paul and Catholic Epistles (https://isidore.co/calibre/#panel=book_details&book_id=8431).

The Catena Aurea deals primarily with the Gospels.

It is a multi-volume set, but they are nice hardbound, blue volumes.
