I once read a quote, something to the effect of "Only being a Catholic saves you from the supreme degradation of being a child of his age (the decade you were born)."

I would add: it saves you from the degrading and embarrassing pitfalls due to our culture, being male/female, etc.

For example, being victims of brainwashing, advertising (but I repeat myself), psychological maneuvers, pick up artists, etc. When you have the truth, and you serve God, you deny yourself often and don't live by your "feelings" -- which means that those who know how to manipulate those feelings can't play you like a fiddle. Whether that person is a corporation trying to sell you a product, a pick up artist trying to get you into bed, etc.

It's funny how I observe worldlings "free" from the yoke of Christ, but they fall headlong into all these myriad traps.  He who will not serve God, will be a slave to sin.

Don't ever kid yourself: the grass is NOT greener over on the "religion-less" side. They have nothing to stem their natural inclinations, and so anyone who understands nature (advertisers, fashion designers, corporations, psychologists, pick up artists, etc.) have a FIELD DAY with these people.

  • Can anyone point me to the original version of the quote? I'm looking for it, and my "quotes.txt" file let me down.

    I think it was Chesterton.

    Thanks!

    I found it!

"The Catholic Church is the only thing that frees a man from the degrading slavery of being a child of his age."
The original quote by Chesterton does not convey the same message today, because people look at the Catholic Church as the visible hierarchy the Vatican II popes and clergy, and 1.3+ million baptized "Catholics" who do not really live the faith. Therefore, someone wisely changed it to a "Traditional Catholic saves you from degradations of your culture, sex, age".

Related to it, Theodore Rooseve when he paid a visit to South America at the turn of the 20th century said:
"While these countries remain Catholic," he said, "we will not be able to dominate them."

Practically no one LIVES the Catholic Faith today, therefore, they are easily caught in the degrading slavery of being a child of his age.

The modesty in dress of the ladies is an outward manifestation of the inner soul. When I see ladies that go to the traditional mass and that dress during the rest of the week like the world, it is an indication to me that there is something wrong. Some will say, do not judge a book by its cover, however, a book is an inanimate object, it will always be the same cover. The outward manifestations of man are what the man is, though it can change over time and improve or degrade further, it is always manifesting the condition of the inner soul. One can fake the outward for only so long, if say they are only seen at mass and not the rest of the week.

I could hardly disagree more with that unorthodox ecclesiology. The Catholic Church is traditional, orthodox, and holy. Her members hold to timeless dogmas and practices. Formal heretics are not a part of the Catholic Church. She is in no way represented by modernist Vatican hierarchs. Saying "traditional Catholic" is redundant, like saying "theistic Christian" or "saintly saint." Letting infidels (who have an erroneous view of what being a Catholic is) control your language is in essence acquiescing to "the degradation of being a child of your age."

All true, but you must finish it and teach everyone how to correctly write what I was attempting to convey.  I do not see any other way to write what I wrote, so teach me your better way. Here is my quote, let's see how you would have written it for the average Catholic in the pews to understand it (which is what I was doing) :

    Yup.
Hooked clothing, hooked makeup, hooked shoes, etc., at mass.  Hard to still want to go....  no wonder the numbers are going down...

    "Hooker" not "hooked".  Darn auto-correct.

I've seen quite a few degraded (former) traditional Catholics. Seen quite a few enthusiastically give up the faith to follow the absolute worst the world has to offer. And others who, though not having left the faith decisively, are nevertheless quite given to the world's degradations and see the faith as an inconvenience. Some come from good families, others don't. So, anecdotally, it seems to me that trads rather significantly overestimate the degree to which their 'being trad' insulates and protects them from the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

Hookers 100 years ago dressed more modestly than what we see at Mass.

Yep. Pride will do that. You can be the traddest of trads in all traddom and still go to hell. It's a two way street, and always has been for Catholics. It's just that the power of the world has been significantly strengthened these days while the Church has been eclipsed. Being a trad is being on the right path, for sure, but you still have to walk it with Christ.
"The declared enemies of God and His Church, heretics and schismatics, must be criticized as much as possible, as long as truth is not denied. It is a work of charity to shout: ‘Here is the wolf!’ when it enters the flock or anywhere else." -- Saint Francis de Sales

Saying "traditional Catholic" is redundant, like saying "theistic Christian" or "saintly saint." Letting infidels (who have an erroneous view of what being a Catholic is) control your language is in essence acquiescing to "the degradation of being a child of your age."
There have been some few various times and places in which it became necessary for the Church to clarify itself with a modifying adjective so as to exclude nonCatholics that would be commonly accepted in the worldly community as being Catholic. So, for a time the real Catholic Church was the "Homousian" Church (as distinct from the Homooiousian heretics), in another time so as to distinguish those Catholics we added the word "Roman" to distinguish ourselves from other "Catholics" whose "Pope" lived in London, in another, and in yet another we had to identify ourselves as "Ultramontane." The exact same situation has arisen again, so it is quite proper to add "Traditional" to distinguish from those who have no religious continuity with the Homousian Ultramontane Roman (and Traditional) Catholic Church of all times. None of these appellations change anything but merely existed (and now exist) for practical reasons of clarification and precision of thought and expression. So it literally is perfectly correct and accurate to say that only "The Traditional Catholic Church is the only thing that frees a man from the degrading slavery of being a child of his age." All the other kinds of "Catholic" - Homoiousian, Anglo, Old, Ethiopian, and now Novus Ordo have no protection from "the degrading slavery of being a child of [our] age."

In the early 1960's everyone was a traditionalist Catholic, there was no other mass but the true mass, and they all fell, few made it.

Being a tradtionalist is much more than going to the Latin Mass and sending the children to Sunday catechism, it is about really living the faith.
