Referring to St Augustine, King David and Jayne K. I am most sorry. I step down on that point and retract it. Please consider it unsaid. It might be Puritanism [I have been warned of Jansenistic tendencies], I don't know, but it certainly isn't Christian or merciful. Of course a sincerely penitent sinner can raise children well.
For honesty's sake, I was raised by my mother, aunt and maternal grandparents as my father left my mother when I was very young. God be thanked, they are reconciled. It was much better, of course, than a 'single parent family'. I am apt to think it is better that children in these situations are raised by their relatives rather than a mother alone.
Also, I do not condone the gross abuses in the refuges for penitents -- they are disgusting, an utter disgrace to imagine the clergy committing impurity. Nevertheless the institution is good.
