In the first beatification to take place in the United States, Sister Miriam Teresa Demjanovich (1901-1927) was beatified at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark on October 4.

Cardinal Angelo Amato, the prefect of the Congregation of the Causes of Saints, was the principal celebrant at the Mass.

A Ruthenian Catholic, Blessed Miriam Teresa Demjanovich entered the Roman-rite Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth in 1925, wrote a work entitled Greater Perfection, and professed her vows a month before she died of appendicitis.

In 1964, an eight-year-old boy who had been declared legally blind was healed of his blindness 15 minutes after a Sister of Charity gave him a prayer card of Sister Demjanovich.

“I looked up and I said, ‘Oh boy, I can look at the sun,’” he told a New York television station five decades later. The Vatican determined that the healing was a miracle attributed to the sister’s intercession, clearing the way for her beatification.
