  • I think beards should make a comeback for the same reason hats should make a comeback --

There's something dignified and becoming about a man with facial hair.

How/why did America get the notion that a proper man must look like he's 12? Perhaps this is symptomatic of the general "immaturity" epidemic affecting modern American men? Part of the worship of youth?

Because most (ancient) cultures strongly believed that men should wear beards.

  • I couldn't agree more.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • Speaking from the feminine side I must say I don't like beards, and I'm glad my husband does not grow one.  It has nothing to do with "manliness", just personal preference.  I don't like the feel of facial hair.

  • I think it is unfortunate that the custom of Roman priests is to shave.

A beard, besides being dignified and inherently masculine, is ferocious and makes it so that one cannot but help take the bearded seriously.

Those who cannot grow beards have my sympathy.

But those who refuse to grow them do not.

Not going to give you a hard time or anything, but this is a sad thing to hear.  Women had bearded men for nearly all of Christendom.  There has been no substantial change that has suddenly made them less tolerable than they were before.

ETA: Though I do understand that, especially in the embryonic stage of beard-dom, short whiskers are sharp and can actually cause damage.  However, a good full beard does not have the coarseness and sting of the developing beard.

  • In case anyone is wondering, the pictures are (from top to bottom):
    Uncle Si (from Duck Dynasty)
Sepp Holzer (the Permaculture genius from Austria that can make anything grow in the Alps)
    Ronnie Drew from the Dubliners
    Ronnie Drew (younger)
    St. Matthew
Gandalf (I purposely didn't use the Gandalf from the movies -- the actor who played Gandalf in the movies is a sodomite)

  • My beard looks a lot like the older Ronnie Drew, although  the edges aren't quite that crisp.

  • Alec Guiness wore a good beard:

"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. • Though for the most part, I think beards should be fuller, longer and bigger than the pictures I've linked to.

  • Men shave for the very same reasons women wear pants.

    1. Shaven is more comfortable/convenient.

    2. Shaven looks better/in fashion.

    I keep my beard.

  • Speaking from the feminine side, absolutely love hair in men:  :rahrah:

    Long beard in men, Yes!
Long hair in men , Even Better!

Even when men age, white long hair and beards look fascinating and most dignifying, as long as they are kept clean and tidy.

If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.
