Title: Baptism gift?
Post by: AnthonyPadua on May 05, 2025, 05:16:01 AM
My nephew is getting baptised and I am not sure what to get him, the parents said they would like money for his bank accout, but I think this is a bit worldly, I know in some cultures that they do jewlry/money for sacramental presents, and frankly this seems so wrong to me. Sure the godparents could get them a gold cross of something like that with religious signification that can last them their whole life but for everyone else money just seems off.

Without more information it is hard to answer.  I assume this is a Catholic baptism, but they sound Novus Ordo.  I would just give a little money in a card.  If you get something religious, like a book for kids, it will probably get lost in the shuffle.  If you really feel strongly about the money thing, then just giving a card should be fine.  Are they the type of people who will be offended if you don't give the gift they ask for?

Money does seem off, but there's nothing intrinsically wrong with giving it.  Maybe combine the money with something of religious significance.

For baptisms we usually give a baptismal card and a religious medal, baby chewable rosary or something similar.  Sometimes if we don't have have time/access to get a baby dress for Mass if it is a girl or a little baby suit for a baby boy.

I like the church clothes idea.

We never miss a chance to provide religious gifts for baby:
a Miraculous Medal to pin near the baby's bed, out of reach of course.
baby Rosary as an earlier poster mentioned
Catholic board books, baby's prayer book, true story of Christmas, Easter, etc.
Holy card or book about the baby's Saint name (if applicable)
Catholic music for babies
child's Nativity set
book for the parents on raising a Catholic child
