You should check out St.Marys, KS. Fertile land, abundant water, wonderful environment for a wide variety of crops. Beautiful chapel. I've lived in kansas my whole life, except for one year in Indiana, and my humble little dream is to marry and settle down on a quaint little homestead farm.
And as to city slickers not being cut out for homesteading.... I wouldn't count them out too quickly. Yes, being raised in this atmosphere certainly helps one to settle in a bit easier I suppose. But I know and have read of many city folk who have successfully pulled off the homestead/live off the land lifestyle with relative ease. I think a lot of this has to deal with our human nature, the way we were created. Living off the land has a certain fulfillment you can't find by going to the grocery store, and this is because God in his wisdom created us in such a way. That fulfillment one finds by getting back (way back) to their roots card certainly has the ability to trump the I was born and raised in the city card.
I was raised on a farm myself. Milking goats, raising chickens, gathering and using wild edibles, etc. I find that way of life quite desirable. Unfortunately I am living in the biggest City in KS right now, but God willing it will only be a relatively brief time before I can get back to my homesteading ways. But this time with my own design (and prefferably a husband, which in that case would be our design).
My 2 cents. :)
