Title: Baby Boomers vs Current Generation
Post by: Matthew on October 25, 2012, 05:44:35 PM
I'll get us started:

The first item is the "Baby Boomer way" of doing things; then a dash, then the current generation's alternative.

Baby Boomer way - Current generation's tendency or alternative

30-year Mortgage - Save up and buy house/rent/pay off mortgage early
Credit Cards - Debt-free living, Dave Ramsey
College education - Apprenticeship/self-study/learn online
3 or 4 children - More children (trad. Catholics)
Formula feeding - Breastfeeding
Cry it out - Attachment parenting/Baby wearing
Baby's 1st food at 4 months - Extended Breastfeeding
Crib at 4 months - Co-sleeping
Public School - Homeschool
Processed/frozen/convenience food - Organic, GMO-free, healthy food
Dad goes off to work all day - Work from home/multiple part-time jobs
Belief in the Stock Market - Complete lack of faith in the Stock Market, buy Gold/Silver
Hope of SS, pension, retirement - Have enough kids to support you, and/or just hope and pray!
Magazine Subscriptions - Internet
Cable TV - Internet, NetFlix, Youtube
Donate stuff to Goodwill - Sell it on Craigslist, eBay
Buy or Lease a new vehicle every 4 years - Buy one used vehicle and drive it until it dies
Car is a sex/status symbol - Car is basic transportation; a depreciating asset; a necessary evil
Insurance for everything - Insurance when required by law
Keep financial, health matters private, even from family - Post extremely detailed personal monthly budget, including what you ate for lunch, on your "Getting out of debt" blog
Privacy extremely important - Who cares about privacy?
Views Internet with apprehension, suspicion - Met spouse on Internet
Buy household items at department store - Buy everything possible on Amazon.com or other online venue
Buy lots of toys, electronic gizmos for children - Let kids play outside, play with old-fashioned toys

My own cousins have the baby boomer mentality. It is strikingly counter cultural compared to the Catholic alternative.

To me, the list doesn't make much sense.
Does this list refer to what goes today for these two groups?
Baby boomer and Current generation means traditionalists or the general public?

All too vague and non-specific!

And the order could be reversed for some.

I agree.

Matthew,

I think for the most part you are refering to a serious traditionalist, except for a few points maybe. Also, there are many successful baby boomers that used the financial techniques on the right.

Baby Boomer way - Current generation's tendency or alternative

30-year Mortgage - Save up and buy house/rent/pay off mortgage early (30 year mortgage is a great idea, as long as you use it right)

Credit Cards - Debt-free living, Dave Ramsey (young people today use credit cards more than baby boomers)

College education - Apprenticeship/self-study/learn online (this applies only a trad. Young people today go to college much more than baby boomers did)3 or 4 children - More children (trad. Catholics)

Formula feeding - Breastfeeding (trads only)

Cry it out - Attachment parenting/Baby wearing (trads only)

Baby's 1st food at 4 months - Extended Breastfeeding (trads only)

Crib at 4 months - Co-sleeping (trads only)

Public School - Homeschool (trads only)

Processed/frozen/convenience food - Organic, GMO-free, healthy food
(this should be reversed now. trads eat whatever is the cheapest. Baby boomers eat expensive health foods))

Dad goes off to work all day - Work from home/multiple part-time jobs

Belief in the Stock Market - Complete lack of faith in the Stock Market, buy Gold/Silver

Hope of SS, pension, retirement - Have enough kids to support you, and/or just hope and pray!

Magazine Subscriptions - Internet (the whole world is doing this)

Cable TV - Internet, NetFlix, Youtube (only frugal people do this)

Donate stuff to Goodwill - Sell it on Craigslist, eBay (everyone doing it)
Buy or Lease a new vehicle every 4 years - Buy one used vehicle and drive it until it dies (baby boomers did it too)

someone else do the rest

Car is a sex/status symbol - Car is basic transportation; a depreciating asset; a necessary evil
Insurance for everything - Insurance when required by law
Keep financial, health matters private, even from family - Post extremely detailed personal monthly budget, including what you ate for lunch, on your "Getting out of debt" blog
