Aversion to Gregorian chant - possessed?

  • I came across the following quote, from a real human being:

    Quote
I’ve developed an aversion to Gregorian Chant because it sounds so dead to me. I don’t hear the joy of God in it.

Someone is either possessed, or she is SO brainwashed by the Novus Ordo that ONLY VISCERAL, HOPPING, REVIVAL-STYLE, EMOTIONAL STIR-UP MUSIC does the job for her now.

This is a person who, somehow, has been reprogrammed or conditioned to the point that she wouldn't know the "joy of God" if it walked up and slapped her in the face.

I'll admit -- I have many secular kinds of music in my collection that do a MUCH better job of "waking me up in the morning" or revving me up emotionally. When I'm cleaning out the shed or pouring a concrete sidewalk, I prefer listening to Irish folk, high paced "video game" music, and other popular music.

It's a question of DISSIPATION vs. RECOLLECTION. If you want to be recollected -- inside yourself, thinking about God, your soul, eternity -- then Chant is the answer. If you want to be DISSIPATED or "outside yourself" doing work, thinking about work, tasks, practical concerns -- then any other kind of real music (lyrics, melody, harmony) will do.

But for peace of soul, thinking about God, thinking about heaven and eternity -- there is NO substitute for Gregorian Chant. Even Classical music, *when trying to do this specific job*, seems like putting on a CD of Classic Rock or Heavy Metal by comparison. In other words, Chant is in a class by itself.

  • What's "dead" is the person's soul.  Basically, it's like a radio station that's broadcasting.  If your radio isn't set to the right frequency, you don't hear it and it's dead to you.  But that's not because the signals aren't there, just that you're not tuned into them.  These people can't tune in to the frequency of Chant because their souls have been killed off.  Gregorian Chant only resonates with people who have a true spirit of prayer.

  • Great analyses by Matthew and Lad.
I will add that she has the Jezebel spirit.

100% agree. Often, my reaction to Gregorian chant is a good litmus test of where my soul is.
"Be not therefore solicitous for tomorrow; for the morrow will be solicitous for itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof." [Matt. 6:34]

"In all thy works remember thy last end, and thou shalt never sin." [Ecclus. 7:40]

"A holy man continueth in wisdom as the sun: but a fool is changed as the moon." [Ecclus. 27:12]

  • I will add Cistercian chant to the list.

And Chant of the Templars to get one up and crusading! :cowboy:
Da pacem Domine in diebus nostris
    Qui non est alius
    Qui pugnet pro nobis
    Nisi  tu Deus noster
