  • I especially ask this to traditonal Catholic married couples here. Is it really alright to have arguments between spouses? Should they hold back instead? I would like to have an actual Catholic viewpoint on the matter because I have been instead more often gathering the viewpoint of the modern world.

  • I imagine that by arguments you mean unpleasant exchanges of differences of opinion. I guess disagreements are inevitable in any marriage, including marriages between Catholics. It all depends what you do with them. A couple has to find a way to deal with disagreements while remaining loving to each other. Not always easy. I have learnt over the years to hold my tongue, and if it comes to any unpleasantness to walk away for the time being, to learn to offer up little humiliations, which also are inevitable and good for the soul if used well.

    Does that help?

Can't think of any particular Church teaching on the matter except for Thou shalt not kill!

  • Wow!  After 43 years of marriage, I can say, we have all been there.  Recently, I have asked my guardian angel for advise.  Hold tongue?  Yes, for awhile, till you are sure of what is to be said.  Don't hold back or hide your feelings.  Write down how you feel is another option and then give the letter.

Also, I ask myself, is the devil here?  Is there holy water in the house?  Use it often to sprinkle the house and, before bed yourself and sprinkle.

The major target of the devil is the family!!  Rosary to be said together as a couple! That is an absolute.  My husband found it difficult to say family rosary.  He had obstacles that he had to deal with and age and lack of hormones add to the 7 layer cake mess.  Finally a good priest said, You don't say daily rosary with your wife?!! Shame on you!  When my husband decided to do it, he decided to give me a kiss after each decade. Now, that may not be what is proper, but in our home I sure can't fight that. Any way you can get a rosary, Go for it!!

Don't be surprised if the spouses are not on the same page.  That can be expected but don't get comfortable with that.  We all need to grow in spirituality.  We need the Blessed Virgin and the Holy Ghost  in our decision making.

Whatever happens, be sure you talk with a clear head.  Make arguments work for your growing.  Sometimes we have a picture different then the spouse, Oh, I thought you meant this or that.  The toughest for me is if there is lying.  That really hurts.  No one wants to be called a liar, but we can approach it.

When you have children more pressure as to how to discipline.  Authority is #!.  But the children teach us how to control disagreements and how they are to be managed.
This is what we are asking, how we are to manage an issue.  Prayer is #1.

Learn to disagree without being disagreeable.

Very good, it is that simple, really.

Also, learn from your disagreements that are disagreeable and over time you will both improve. The sacrament of Confession is the most important way to learn to disagree without being disagreeable, it opens one to God's Grace  and His gifts. Only from God can we learn how to disagree without being disagreeable.
