  • I wanted to say- for the past few years, my mom has found some WONDERFUL pre VII books at our local antique and thrift stores. I've found myself recently doing the same... seeking out my next Catholic gem there. I've found some interesting stuff- missals, prayer books, a really neat collection called "Psillium" (I gave as a gift to my priest- since its made for priests)Its a interesting feeling really- to hold a missal or spiritual book with a 1920's imprimature and someone's name / signature feels sort of ... interesting. You wonder- where is this person now? On Earth? In heaven? Hell? Purgatory? What would they say seeing me hold this book almost 100 years later ....

  • Yes, I've found some real Catholic treasures in antique stores and old book shops.

You look for the black covers..

And finding out a little about who came before.

Just the other day I received 'The Golden Arrow' from a used book store, and the book was in perfect condition.. but some devout soul had placed two flower stickers on the front pages, perfectly placed to offset the quotes and prayer.

    Sincerely,

    Shin

  • It is Divine Providence.

I just found a mint condition English Bible Missal from 1956 for $2.49.

I had to restrain myself from lunging for it because a scholarly man beside me might have been alerted and gotten it first, and I would have had to swallow my disappointment.

I once found an old Oriental rug that had come off a Catholic altar.  It's pretty worn out but we love it.

  • I found many classic pre vatican 2 Roman Catholic Books, including 2 sets
of the 1917 Catholic Encyclopedias, 1920 Altar Missal, St. Gregory
Hymnals, Braverys. Lives of the Saints, rare finds.
An autograpth copy of Bishop Fulton Sheens "Gods of War" from the
    1940's.
The Acres of Books located in Long Beach,California. The largest
second hand book store on the West Coast.
But with regrets, it is now closed. The property sold for
    redevelopment.
I was a frequent customer of this store from 1963 to 2006.

  • I once found a large, thick book called something like Treasures of the Faith in a used bookstore.  It was an amazing compendium of all things Catholic, published in the 1890's.  It cost me $5.00.  I was a teenager at the time, and loved it.  I read it through twice, which was no mean task.  I gave it away when I moved once, and have regretted it ever since.

  • I have always loved antique and second hand shops though I don't usually go to many because they are generally pretty expensive. Though perhaps I will have to start going more often as these little treasures should be in good hands and not wasted.
