Dear Forum,

I am reading the book series, "God The Teacher of Mankind," by Father Michael Mueller. It was published around 1883. In Volume 3 on page 473 Father Mueller writes, "In 1865, Dr. Morse Stewart, of Detroit Michigan could not help declaring that "among married persons the practice of destroying the legitimate results of matrimony had become so extensive that people of high repute not only commit this crime, but do not even blush to speak boastingly among their intimates of the deed and the means of accomplishing it." This above was from America in 1865. The evil runs deep.

Jesus and Mary,
David

  • Of course, the world has always been like that. Evil is not a recent thing.

"For all that is in the world is the concupiscence of the flesh and the concupiscence of the eyes, and the pride of life, which is not of the Father, but is of the world."
    [1 John 2:16]

I remember our next door neighbours. The lady died at 105 years old many years ago. She had a sister and a brother. They all married and had one child  between them. She had a career in the bank. Her sister heard that my mother was pregnant (probably her sixth) and told another neighbour, "Mrs xxxx is so happy, you'd think she won the lottery."

My dear Mum used to say "People don't change. They just get moreso."
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

  • Destroying legitimate results:  is this abortion? I have read a book or two.  One was speaking of endometriosis.  But that name did not come about till after 1900.  It said, "adhesives" results of "evil ways".  I thought and pondered that.

I read this term as implying the practice of contraception in some manner or technique. I haven't read this book by Fr. Mueller, but he probably wanted to spare the reader the details of what was being done.
