Yet another song or TV show I've never seen. Sometimes I feel like an absolute relic. Over the weekend, nobody believed that we (our family) hadn't seen "Big Bang Theory". I had no idea what it was. They started bouncing off all these shows we must have seen (and have not).

I do watch Downton Abbey. And I've watched a few others (names escape me now), and I thought I was quite the rebel for that, but apparently people turn on a TV and watch everything. ???

We don't, and Downton is just for us adults (and even that has plummeted in quality, but I don't want to spoil anyone who might not have seen the 4th series yet).

On recommendation though, I tried "The Waltons" on TV Land or ABC Family. I could get past only a few episodes, and although parts were cute (I liked the grandfather), the mom on that show wears the pants in the family, clearly. I was told I didn't try enough episodes, but the ones I tried were horrible! The dad refused to get Baptised. Stupidly, I thought there was going to be a scene where this dad "outed" the Baptist man who was yelling at the parish for no reason at all, who I had believed was the antagonist. (I'm serious. If that is a typical Baptist service, with people sitting and sleeping in a town hall as they're yelled at to get "saved", to a crowd who has surely been "saved" over and over again, what else do they do? Do they pray? Ever?) I had reason to believe the dad and his sons were going to have an epiphany and convert, though, because the dad walked out, and I cheered him on.  

The conclusion wasn't that Baptists were misguided, and the dad knew it because of the Bible. Oh no: the conclusion was that this dad thought God should take him "as is", without Baptism and rules, and he figured he was a mighty fine man as is. And the mom (the resolution of this "story") said, "Yes, you may be right; you are a good man. Maybe God doesn't need you to be Baptised."

It was the worst filth I'd seen...   I almost kicked my TV! And that show was filmed in the early days of TV, I'd guess. You ought to try a few episodes and see how it compares to this Reba woman. They sound about the same regarding feminism, only the Waltons is older. If you could only see how they portrayed "a church service" —no, nevermind. It's shocking, terrible, and I'm not going to suggest anyone watch it.

So I've got to ask, is the song "Is there life out there" referring to aliens? (Curiosity is peaked now.) I don't want to watch the video; I'll take your word for it being base.

Oh you mean the series with a bunch of wierdo science nerds who sit around playing video games and trading cards, wondering why none of them can get girls? Although I'm sure a few guys here on Cathinfo would feel right at home with them ha. :wink:

Yeah another bad show: science nerds mock religious beliefs from beginning to end.

"Religion plays a minor role in the series. Sheldon was raised in a fundamentalist Christian household. He refers to his childhood as "hell" during his date in "The Robotic Manipulation", and a recurrent theme is his conflict with his devout mother, Mary, who is a creationist, and whose beliefs often clash with Sheldon's knowledge and understanding of evolution. In the episode "The Financial Permeability", Raj quotes from the book of Leviticus after Howard eats pork, and Howard counters with the fact that he keeps quiet when Raj eats a Whopper.[72] Nevertheless, they are seen to be semi-observant. Raj, for example, occasionally mentions reincarnation and explains his belief in karma, stating that he believes it to be "practically Newtonian – for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." Howard celebrates at least some Jєωιѕн holidays, once refused to pray in a Christian church so he doesn't "burst into flames" and also wore tattoo sleeves instead of getting real tattoos so he "still can be buried in a Jєωιѕн cemetery".[73]

Another frequent theme is Penny's confidence in beliefs that frequently conflict with Leonard and Sheldon's scientific beliefs and knowledge, such as ghosts, astrology, psychics and voodoo. This is first seen in her very first appearance, when she makes reference to her being a Sagittarius, to which Sheldon criticises her belief in astrology, but is most frequently seen in an episode in which she and Leonard had a falling out over the validity of psychics.[74]"

Woah, you really live among the Amish, Frances? I have so many questions! (That was actually a show I tried to catch, "Breaking Amish", but it turned out to be nothing about Amish. :/ It was about ex-Amish, I think. We turned it off.) Congratulations on your "relic" status, Frances! Seems safer!

Trad: YOU WIN! I'd thought the shows we were discussing were bad, but that one (Big Bang Theory) sounds like the worst thing ever made. I hope it's not prime time. Assuming they still divide 8pm shows into "okay, prime time" shows, and the racier ones into the 10pm time slots. Doesn't sound like that's a safe assumption, though.

Grandfather Walton was a Sodomite?! In real life, or his character? That's ...wow. I can't even deal with that, either way. Glad I didn't watch more of it.

This is why I stay away from Hollyweird stuff — guess I'd rather stay in the dark. The stuff that does seep through (magazine covers as you're checking out of stores) is bad enough. We basically boycott Walmart, but you can't boycott everything. Stuff slips through. I try hard to avoid, but covering magazines with others doesn't much help. We'll go out of our way to support local stores that keep that trash out of the aisles. (Sorry to sound so judgemental, but I really detest being forced to see "cyborg" Hollyweirdos.)

I wonder if we really don't make Sodom look good, for real.

That's right; I've heard of that. I don't tend to watch the networks, but on the unfortunate occasions they advertise during the local news,   I think that's where I saw an ad for it. Maybe during a football game.

Very sad. I'd heard most network tv was "gαyed up" now (Sodomite supporting). My dad said they went through a stage where a race group counted all the interracial couples, and maybe this, too, shall pass. (Apparently there aren't many interracial couples on tv, is what he's saying.) TV is a wasteland, mostly. But what it's giving way to (self-produced you tube-type videos, or some sort of "social [pressure] networking" peer group) doesn't sound much better.
