All accents NOT created equal

  • Some accents I could listen to all day --

Other accents I consider an earthly Purgatory --

The funny thing is, I actually enjoy different accents, including (but not limited to): Scottish, Irish, English, Australian, New Zealand, German, Slavic/Russian, Romanian, French, Italian, Polish, Mexican, etc. And various closer-to-home accents like Southern, Texas, plantation (high end Southern gentleman), Canadian, etc.

But it does seem like some accents just suck.

  • Interesting. I guess everyone has his opinion regarding accents. I enjoy the accents of people from Jamaica and Haiti and some African nations who learned their English from Catholic sisters or the British. Ghetto rat English from the US or UK makes me grit my teeth. I hate it! I can understand it; I just don’t like it. I like Irish accents and Russian and Polish. They’re my background, so it’s natural. I like most New York accents, from the city to all over the state, only exception is ‘hood’ talk. I do NOT like White Southern Preacher (Protestant) accent or manner of speaking. There’s something in that culture that makes me cringe. I do not care for  Spanish accents, probably because I have difficulty understanding them. Same with Indian accents. If I get someone on the phone with a strong Indian accent, like they learned as an adult, just enough to work at the call center, I often give up and try again hoping for someone who’s more fluent. Most British accents I not only like, but can understand. (Exception, ghetto British)

  • I'm probably the one here who like the Indian/Paki English accent. That's why I find them easier to understand. I also like the Maltese accent for the same reason.

I got the Adirondacks accent that gets me through most of the country. The city accent in nyc to Boston is mostly cuss words and unfortunately that has crept into my dialect a bit 😆 I try and fight but it takes some effort.

I'm sorry. I wanted to say I like them BECAUSE i find easier to understand. Not why.

  • The first accent you shared Matthew is educated Scottish. I love that accent too. Agree with you the Indian accent is difficult to listen to… lots of call centre staff have this accent. What’s your favourite British accent?

I’m in uk and my favourite American accent is Deep South… I hate the nasal American accent and ‘vocal fry’ horror that seems popular with young American women.

  • Being from NY, the hardest accents I ever dealt with was when I was in the marines dealing with guys from Louisiana and most parts of the deep south, whatever they speak there, it ain't English.

I had to watch O Brother, Where Art Thou? with subtitles.  I found a re-creation of 1930s Mississippi English to be impenetrable.

I grew up in NYC and surrounds. So did my parents, grandparents, and great grandparents although some of the latter came as young children from Europe.
My family had different NYC accents depending upon where they grew up, which Borough, and when. I can assure you none of them including myself and siblings use cuss words.
If we did, our bottoms would smart and we’d taste the dish soap for three days.

You’re from the Adirondacks? I lived in various parts of the North Country for 10 years in the 1970’s and 1980’s. I’m curious as to where! PM me!

Interesting!  Are you referring to British English or American?  I was watching some reruns of GPs Behind Closed Doors on YT. For some reason, I found the Indians/Pakis easier to understand when speaking British English. Don’t assume you’re the only one on CI who likes the accents. As I said, it’s a matter of opinion, not fact. And it doesn’t have anything to do with liking or approving of the individuals who have the accents.
Someone gave me a 👎🏼 for sharing my opinions. That’s rather trivial, no? Opinions on such matters are neither right nor wrong. If we did a survey of favorite colors, would you 👎🏼 a person for liking a different color?
I’m thinking a certain person may have down thumbed me because I have trouble understanding Spanish accents. That doesn’t mean I don’t like Spanish speaking people! All it means is I have difficulty understanding Spanish accented English!
As for Maltese, I’m not sure I could recognize the language itself if I heard it much less the accent in English. I will make a point to look it up!
