Fr Gommar de Pauw did say, posthumously via a Mr Richard Cuneo, that JP1 called him to Rome to help restore the Mass, that Cardinal Ottaviani rated Cardinal Luciani quite highly. If Francis hears of this, the cause will come to a sudden, shuddering halt.
I've always had to wonder what things would have looked like, if Luciani had lived.
In 1978, things weren't deeply-entrenched enough, that a reversal of the Mass changes wouldn't have been possible. You still had many people who remembered the TLM. Now, not so much. What we have now, is new generations rediscovering and re-appropriating it.
