Abstaining from meat on Feast of the Sacred Heart?

    • According to Fisheaters, you don't abstain or fast on Friday if a 1st Class Feast falls on that day.

    But I don't know... the Angelus calendar has a fish on that day symbolizing "abstinence (traditional)"

    I am inclined to go ahead and do the relatively easy penance -- we all have to do our penance, and it's really not that difficult to give up meat for ONE DAY.

    What do you think?

    • The Feast Day of the Sacred Heart, as established and illustrated by Pope Pius XI in his Encyclical Letter Miserentissimus Redemptor (8 May 1928), is suffused with the spirit of reparation and atonement.

    So, I would think that the abstinence from flesh-meats would be most fitting, and it would dispose the soul to receive more graces on such a great Feast Day by conforming in such manner to the spirit of sacrifice and atonement that is seen in the Mass and Office: whether or not the law of Friday abstinence obliges (and I believe it does).

    • I did not grow up in tradition as would have been the case a couple of generations ago, so I really don't understand all of the rules and reasons for fasting and partial fasting on any particular day.

    That said, it is my understanding that first class feasts don't necessarily release one from fast or abstinence if that day would ordinarily require it unless that first class feast is a holy day of obligation.  Since the Sacred Heart of Jesus is not a holy day of obligation in my country, the ordinary Friday abstinence rule this year is still in effect since this day falls on a Friday.

    In any event, because I am ignorant of all the traditional understanding of these rules, the safe course is to make use of a traditional Catholic calendar and ensure I fast and abstain on the days indicated.  I have three such calendars available to me from different publishers and all of them have the little fish symbol on Friday, 15 June 2012.

    I think it safe to say that the lay canonists on Fisheaters really don't have a clue.

    • My understanding is that if a Double First Class feast falls on a Friday, then you are not obligated to fast.  In fact, since it's a feast, you can really enjoy a big steak dinner.

    Yes, you are correct.  Only when a Holy Day of Obligation falls on a Friday, is the law of abstinence dispensed.
