    • I have a simple question.

    Would attending a Mass for a deceased person by more effective than having a Mass said for them without attending it?

    • Hello,

    I assume when you say "attending Mass for a deceased person" you mean that the Priest is not actually offering Mass for that person, but accepted a stipend and is actually offering the Mass for a different intention.

    It would be best to do at the same time both of the things you propose: have a Mass offered the repose of the deceased person, and you attend that Mass.

    Assisting at the Holy Sacrifice for the repose of the soul of dead person is efficacious for the person's soul and for you.

    The soul of the dead person benefits as does the soul of those who assisted at Mass, especially having received the Holy Eucharist.

    Paying the stipend for a requiem Mass is an act of charity and would bring forth graces too, perhaps more indirectly.

    By not assisting in prayers and the actual Sacrifice of that Mass, it would be less efficacious.
