    WEDNESDAY, MAY 1, 2013

    Quote
European Life Network ELN in an initial reaction to the Irish Government’s proposed “Human Life in Pregnancy Bill 2013’ has issued the following statement.
The Irish government draft bill on abortion is worse than Britain's 1967 Abortion Act, far from being restrictive as the government claims, the bill has the potential to lead to widespread availability of abortion.

The bill proposes to abolish sections 58 & 59 of the Offences Against The Person Act 1861, under which abortion in general remains a criminal offence. That provision is retained even in Britain. The vast majority of abortions in Britain are in fact unlawful under the 1861 Act, if the Abortion Act was interpreted honestly (instead of being widely flouted).

Regarding abortion for suicidal mothers, the bill goes beyond both the mental health grounds of Britain's 1967 Abortion Act and of British case-law such as the 1938 Bourne judgment. Unlike British law, the bill makes ѕυιcιdє an explicit, statute-level ground for abortion.

The bill explicitly removes protection for unborn children before implantation in the womb, thus ensuring that they can be aborted legally, by drugs and devices such as the morning-after pill.

Even the name of the bill "Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill 2013" is misleading and hypocritical, as it does not protect unborn life in a wide variety of circuмstances and is contrary to the equal protection for mothers and their unborn children under the Irish Constitution.

"We call upon all Irishmen and women to unite to ensure that this bill is thrown out of the Oireachtas at the first vote. There must be absolute and unequivocal opposition to all abortion expressed in a loud and clear manner by church leaders, pro-life groups and politicians.

Today must mark the end, not the beginning, of abortion in Ireland.

ELN will in due course, issue a more complete statement when an in-depth study of the proposed legislation has been carried out.

  • I found this blog post from a priest about it.

Fr John Hogan, OCDS, a Secular Discalced Carmelite priest serving in the Diocese of Meath, Ireland, is the founder and current Father Director of the Fraternity of St Genesius, an international association of prayer for those in the arts and media. He co-hosts the television series "Forgotten Heritage" on the Eternal Word Television Network.

    Abortion: The Done Deal
    Quote
It seems the politicians are closing ranks as the attack on the abortion bill begins.  Government is insisting that this bill will not lead to abortion on demand, or as the Taoiseach said, there is no intention to introduce abortion on demand - note the subtlety there!  Pro-abortion TDs, Clare Daly foremost among them, are condemning the bill because it does not go far enough.  I'm sure that just posturing on their part, this bill opens the door - in a few years Planned Parenthood and Marie Stopes will be fully cranked up and working away to these politicians' delight.

I have been reading the legislation and it is appalling.  Included in it is an attack on Catholic hospitals.  While the bill recognises the right to conscientious objection for individuals (for now - I see that part being repealed if too many doctors and nurses opt out), it will not permit institutions to object so Catholic hospitals will be forced under this legislation to carry out abortions.  What this government is doing to our schools, it now seeks to do to our hospitals.  I cannot help but think this is part of Labour's plan to cut Christianity out of Irish life.   Given that bishops sit on the boards of our Catholic hospitals, we await a response.

Another deeply distressing development is that when a woman seeks an abortion, there need not be an immediate danger to her life.  I see that as meaning that she turns up, says she will kill herself if she can't have an abortion, and so the panel grants her request.

And as expected, there will be no free vote.  All government TDs will have to go against their conscience and vote for the bill.  Speaking as a pastor of souls, the party whip does not serve as a mitigating circuмstance when it comes to sin: the TD will bear full responsibility for his or her vote and will have to answer to God for it.

This bill is not only offensive to life, but it is deeply flawed.  Having looked at it I conclude that no Catholic can support it and remain in good standing in the Church.  We priests will have to get advice on this, but I think that Catholic TDs who vote for this bill (and perhaps Catholic ministers who have already voted on it in cabinet) remove themselves from communion with the Church.   An important issue now is: does the Catholic Church in Ireland have the courage to speak the truth in the face of this legislation?

  • I can't say that war has been declared as Catholics have always had an enemy. These liberals are making war on God. I asked a spokesman for Ruairi Quinn, the rabid anti Catholic Minister for Education, why doesn't the Minister come out and say he wants to machine gun all Catholics? Quinn, an atheist makes no secret of his hatred for Catholics though tries to veil it.

I did tell him Catholics would fight back. This was a few weeks ago. I also told the Sisters of Mercy to stand their ground with this enemy of Catholics.

It is now open warfare. The day of lobbying politicians is over and voting 'pro-life'. Fianna Fail, who passed pro-life motions at their recent conference have welcomed the legislation. I will search their exact wording but have always favoured a 'middle way' regarding abortion.

A counter power is mobilising. We are in a new era now in Ireland.

  • With Alan Shatter of Fine Gael happily shattering Ireland it is too convenient to say Fine Gael were bullied by the 'junior partner' in government, the Labour party.

An uncle of mine went to university with Eamon Gilmore and Pat Rabbitte of Labour. They were Stalinist then and self serving. Nothing has changed decades on. Both will retire at the next election having enjoyed the gravy train. Two men, whose interest is self interest.

Fine Gael and Labour are mortally wounded for certain.

  • The only way forward for Ireland now is to pray and act accordingly. It will be important not to lose ground in the media storm. It's no good to sit back and wait until the next election to punish the politicians for their treason.

    67. Those who hold the reins of government should not forget that it is the duty of public authority by appropriate laws and sanctions to defend the lives of the innocent, and this all the more so since those whose lives are endangered and assailed cannot defend themselves. Among whom we must mention in the first place infants hidden in the mother's womb. And if the public magistrates not only do not defend them, but by their laws and ordinances betray them to death at the hands of doctors or of others, let them remember that God is the Judge and Avenger of innocent blood which cried from earth to Heaven.[53]

  • I visited an office of a Fine Gael politician earlier. He wasn't there. His secretary and a  councillor were present. I told them they would be held account and left. Half way down the street I met another member of their party, a former mayor of a county. I very calmly told him what I thought of them and walked on.

Then came Vatican II and Pope John Paul II with his theological inventions and concessions. Not for him the HARD teaching on baptism, no, he led all to BELIEVE babies who die without baptism COULD enjoy the beatific vision. My Fathers Catholic dilemma was thus seen as unnessary and futile.

As you can imagine this 'change of doctrine' hurt me to the core. I saw the devil at work here. Today my father would be classed as a Catholic lunatic, with both Church and State insisting the life of the mother is absolutely superior to the unborn child. Sure if aborted babies go straight to heaven, then what better way to fill heaven with ANGELS. From the moment Pope John Paul II offered his theological opinion, no longer would Catholic teaching influence Catholic mothers contemplating abortion.

Yes, from that moment on the Catholic pro-life lobbies became HUMANISTS.

I recall going to one very large pro-life convention with all the 'leaders' giving their reasons why the country should be pro-life and defend pro-life laws. I eventually got to speak. I said if the traditional Catholic teaching on the fate of aborted babies was taught, fewer Catholic abortions would take place. Who could live knowing they prevented their child from such an eternity? Then they started, quoting Pope John Paul II, and the hurt such a doctrine would cause to those with miscarriages. They then told me a certain priest would have words with me AFTER THE CONFERENCE. They wanted NO MORE of that HARD DOCTRINE stuff at peo-life rallies. Luckily, no priest came near me, lucky for him that is.

Whilst many Trads in Ireland assist Youth Defence and others in the pro-life movement, I think they concede, they get Vatican II teaching.

JPII met YD in 1992 so it would be a red rag to the bull to attack JPII. Trad Catholics are a minority in the ranks of YD. The foot soldiers or those that do the donkey work.

Nobody believes for a minute you would have Bishop Williamson speak at a YD event. Nobody is that naive. To use the term 'foot soldiers', Trads are very much the foot soldiers of YD.  They would have Cardinal Pell at an event before they would have even Bishop Fellay.

  • The day of lobbying the politicians is over. The Pro-Life Campaign or the Pro-Zionist Iona Institute will probably continue this folly but this legislation has brought us into a new type of militancy.

Whilst 'graphic' to some we are starting to see the 'old' Youth Defence in Dublin yesterday. Pandering to politicians and being politically correct is a waste of time.

At short notice yesterday hundreds of people gathered in Dublin and showed the truth of abortion.

  • This article just went out today in an attempt to argue in favor of the new abortion law by tearing down the character of the bishops.  While most of you don't recognize the authority of the conciliar bishops in Ireland or anywhere, it would be helpful if as many people as possible went to this site and voted down the pro-abortion comments as they do no good to anyone.  Furthermore, logically speaking, the moral character of the messenger is fully independent of the validity of the message.  An evil person could argue that the world is round, but no rational individual could pose a counter-argument based on the fact that the first is an evil person.

  • It amazes me that no one has anything to say on this issue.  This is probably the most important issue on this forum, considering people's possible direct involvement in the fight over it.  We laypeople don't really have any say in how Bishop Fellay deals or doesn't deal with Rome.  We have no say in whether or not Francis decides to steer the Church back to Tradition.  We have no say in any number of issues which are hotly discussed on this forum.  However, we do have a voice in fighting the Irish parliament and those supporting the new Irish abortion law, but nobody has a thing to say about it.  This makes me angry in a virtuous way.  In a get-the-money-changers-out-of-the-temple way.  We need to fight to make our voices heard or else MANY Irish babies will be slaughtered.  Instead, we fight amonst ourselves about sedevacantism vs. non-sedevacantism and issues such as that.
