  • 911 Dispatcher Tells Woman About To Be Raped That There Are No Cops To Help Her Due To Budget Cuts

    May 24th, 2013

    Next time dial .357 Magnum.

    Via: CBS:
An Oregon woman was told by a 911 dispatcher that authorities wouldn’t be able be able to help her as her ex-boyfriend broke into her place because of budget cuts.
Oregon Public Radio reports that an unidentified woman called 911 during a weekend in August 2012 while Michael Bellah was breaking into her place. Her call was forwarded to Oregon State Police because of lay-offs at the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office only allows the department to be open Monday through Friday.
“Uh, I don’t have anybody to send out there,” the 911 dispatcher told the woman. “You know, obviously, if he comes inside the residence and assaults you, can you ask him to go away? Do you know if he’s intoxicated or anything?”
The woman told the dispatcher that Bellah previously attacked her and left her hospitalized a few weeks prior to the latest incident. The dispatcher stayed on the phone with the woman for more than 10 minutes before the sɛҳuąƖ assault took place.
“Once again it’s unfortunate you guys don’t have any law enforcement out there,” the dispatcher said, according to Oregon Public Radio.
The woman responded: “Yeah, it doesn’t matter, if he gets in the house I’m done.”

  • Which is why everyone needs to own -- and know how to use --- a gun!

If that woman had had a gun, the boyfriend would have been toast, not the woman!

  • Regardless of police, citizens need to THINK and try to think proactively in regard to protecting themselves.  Sitting on the phone inside one's house waiting for someone to break in doesn't make sense to me.  Get out through a window, the backdoor.  Find a weapon ... call someone else ... know your neighbor's call them.

Gosh ... my mind would be racing and trying to think creatively.  Set a fire at the door where he's trying to break in and call the fire dept!!  I know, one should never set a fire.  But really.  We the common folk tend to put too much stock in what a police officer can actually do.  We have to think about prevention and our own self protection.

And yes, get a gun.  That creep breaks the door in and comes after you ... well it's obvious it was forced entry, trespassing and intent to do harm.  Do what you have to do.  No one is going to be able to do much for you.

My wife hates guns. But, she knows how to use one. You can't rely on nothing anymore........ Except God.

I like the .357 Mag solution.  Heck, even a .38 special or a
.22 would be better than nothing.  But it has to be loaded
and it has to be easily accessible.  You're in Texas, where
that isn't a problem.  In California there are heavy, and very
steep obstacles to having the gun and the bullets anywhere
near each other.  They must be stored SEPARATELY or you
can literally go to jail for that.  Having a LOADED gun
anywhere at all in the house is a serious offense.  Go figure.

Not everyone has neighbors nearby, or if they do, not everyone
has neighbors they can trust, unfortunately.

The libs in California would have you going to jail for starting
a fire on purpose.  I know a guy whose wife called the fire
dept because she didn't like the barbecue he was burning
(had a pile of wood on it) and the Fire Dept. gave him a bill
for $400 for a prank call.

Pepper spray -- duct tape -- baseball bat...

I'd say the bare minimum would be pepper spray.  But in a closed-area, you
ought to also have a baseball bat ready, to knock him out when he grabs
his eyes after the spray, because he could recover enough to hurt you if
you don't incapacitate him.  Once he's knocked out, use DUCT TAPE to
tie his hands behind his back and tie his feet together, preferably to his
hands.  Use Lots of Tape. Tape Is Cheap.  Keep the spray within your
reach and out of his reach.  Ditto baseball bat.

Then call the police and say you KILLED an intruder.  They'll find someone
to come out for that, you can be sure.  When they get there, say you
THOUGHT he was dead, but now it seems he was faking it.  What can they
    say about that?

It's pretty sad that we have to sleep at night thinking about pepper spray,
duct tape and baseball bat -- unless you have an illegally loaded gun at
    the ready.

  • "When seconds count, the police are only minutes away."

Or I guess in this case half an hour. A self defense type 12 or20gauge shotgun works well even for women who 'don't like guns', but some training is as always essential.

Here is one example of an inexpensive but effective home defense type shotgun:

There are of course many different possibilities available, more so if someone lives in the USA (at least for now...)

  • I'd have NO problem beating a man to death with a baseball bat or other blunt object.  I also would stab him repeatedly with a knife.  I also would not hesitate to kill a dog that attacked me or my children.  Call me insensitive.

Better to be judged by 12 then carried out by 6.

Those things can certainly work, but one thing to keep in mind is that a low-life that is attacking a woman may very well be drunk/drugged up.  A grown man on drugs can take multiple hits from even a baseball bat before 'feeling it'.  There is a huge advantage to keeping your assailant from getting within arms reach of you.  This is where a firearm really comes in handy.

That said, if someone is being attacked, you fight back with whatever you have close at hand, even if it is a rock, or fists or whatever (and pray!)

  • Not having a gun, this girl should have defended herself with her kitchen cutlery. Everyone who cooks has it!

  • But why not escape?  If she had 10 minutes to be on the phone w/911 why not run if she didn't have a means of self-defense?

What ultimately happened to her?  Any one the rest of the story?

  • Arson, Duct Tape, and murdering the boyfriend for breaking in...like on TV?   Arson to take how many other lives? A normal woman will not harm a man she has been in a relationship with but she is supposed to shoot the boyfriend? Pepper spray? Men are so much stronger to keep her from spraying him.
When you are in that situation, it's very different. How fast are you going to run with a nursing size chest, menstrual cramps, high anxiety due to the situation, sleep deprivation, a newborn (or more children)   and where do you go?  Walk around the block when this man is out to get you? This was her ex-boyfriend, domestic violence, this man was  out to get HER, not some random bulgary or rape of a woman who looks like he could over power.  Blame the victim though for calling 911 and not being proactive. The best protection from a man is another man, unfortunately not all women have that.

  • Pepper spray... will put the fat boy down.
"Some preachers will keep silence about the truth, and others will trample it underfoot and deny it. Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Our Lord Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor but a destroyer."  St. Francis of Assisi
