  • Girl kicked off boys' football team

    by Joe Kovacs

A 12-year-old girl has been kicked off her Christian school’s football team over the fear she might arouse “impure thoughts” among her male teammates.

Maddy Paige of Jackson, Ga., was the starting left defensive tackle as a sixth-grader for Strong Rock Christian School, a private academy in Locust Grove, Ga.

But she was recently informed by the private school’s CEO that she was not welcome to play as a seventh-grader.

“It’s like taking my dream and throwing it in the trash,” Maddy told WXIA-TV in Atlanta.

As far as a reason, Maddy’s mother, Cassy Blythe, told the station: “In the meeting with the CEO of the school [Patrick Stuart], I was told that the reasons behind it were one, that the boys were going to start lusting after her and have impure thoughts about her and that the locker-room talk was not appropriate for a female to hear even though she had a separate locker room from the boys.”

Blythe said Stuart also cited the Bible in making his decision.

“They couldn’t find an exact quote of why she shouldn’t play,” she told Fox5 in Atlanta. “He said, ‘The best I can up with is that men and women are created equal but different.’ And that is all he could say.”

Phil Roberts, the athletic director at Strong Rock, e-mailed news agencies a statement saying, “Our official policy is that middle school girls play girl sports and middle school boys play boy sports.”

Blythe said she feels the school’s reasoning is absurd, telling WXIA: “I think it’s absolutely ridiculous. It shouldn’t be held against Maddy that the boys can’t control their urges and their thoughts. They need to learn how to handle what’s going on with them just like she needs to learn how to handle what’s going on with her growing up, and I think it could be a good learning experience for both the boys and any girls that decide to play at the school.”

When asked about the possibility of lusting in non-sports activity, such as walking down the school halls, Blythe says the school had no explanation.

Maddy noted, “I’m still taking it all in, knowing that I’m not gonna be able to have as much fun as I did last year. But really, it just really, really hurts, because knowing all that fun is gonna be taken away just because I’m a girl.”

Mom and daughter are not giving up the fight to keep Maddy on the gridiron.

They’ve launched a Facebook page titled “Let Her Play,” a campaign for female athletes that has received more than 8,400 likes at this point.

It features numerous comments supporting Maddy and blasting the school, including:

“Why are girls always the blame for boys ‘impure thoughts’? Boys need to be taught from a very young age to have respect for girls. Period.” (Shannon Hudson)

“The Christian School CEO Patrick Stuart used the Bible to justify his move, Stuart said that men and women are created equal but different, and he said he prayed about it and it was the wrong thing to allow Maddy on the team. He was also worried that Maddy might inspire ‘lustful thoughts’ in the boys on the team. What the hell was he trying to imply? This Stuart is an A–, he is living in the dark ages! And why would he be worried about lustful thoughts while a little girl is playing football?” (Pat Harbour)

“Can anyone tell me why a man can be on the cheerleading but a woman can’t play football?! Please tell me.” (Glen Perry)

“This is a new time. Most females can do just as well as the guys. If she makes the cut more power to her. I think she should be able to show the guys she can put them on their cans and do the job. Don’t give up your dream or goal!” (Kenny Smith)

  • Here is a picture of her --

What a waste of an innocent girl's life! To train her to fight and struggle with men.

She's not ugly at all. She even has blue eyes and long, dark brown hair! I'm sure she had the potential to be a beautiful, feminine woman someday. But with the modern world and its ideals battering her every day...

    What's wrong with people today!

  • Don't be mean Zeitun. She's very pretty. She needs to wake up and realise that football is for boys. There are lots of sports for girls, football is not one of them

    No; no, she's not.

Is it because she doesn't use makeup? I hope you're not that biased, being a Baby Boomer.

Maybe if you consider the feminine "pretty boy" look to be the new masculine...but even then, "no".

Let's just say it's a bit personal for me -- my wife has long, dark brown hair and blue eyes, no makeup, and natural beauty. (Though I think she looked quite a bit different as a girl. Her hair was almost blond. Go figure.)

And this girl is only 12 -- she'll probably look much better when she's closer to womanhood. Let's put it this way -- she has a lot of potential, in the physical realm. Not just talking about beauty either -- she obviously has a lot of energy and motivation. Imagine if she were motivated to master all the domestic skills?

It's a shame that girls like this are ruined by the modern world. Usually it's just an abstract concept "the modern world is destroying women". But when you see individual cases of it, it's more sad.

Somewhere in the world, there's a (give or take) 15 year old boy who's going to have a less-than-ideal wife because of how this girl's parents are raising her.

Are you kidding? What man wouldn't want a leader woman who could go to work and let them stay home taking care of the kids?  :smirk:

  • The poor girl is was an occasion of sin to them and they were to her.  There is alot of contact there.  How far did she want to take it?  She would be mashed into pieces in college.

Perhaps the men should stay at home and we can let the women fight our wars and watch them on TV playing football.  Sounds fun.
"I receive Thee, redeeming Prince of my soul. Out of love for Thee have I studied, watched through many nights, and exerted myself: Thee did I preach and teach. I have never said aught against Thee. Nor do I persist stubbornly in my views. If I have ever expressed myself erroneously on this Sacrament, I submit to the judgement of the Holy Roman Church, in obedience of which I now part from this world."      :roll-laugh2:  Thats about where its heading, Lover of truth.
At least the school saw the moral problems, and decided to take her out of football.  You have to hand it to them.

Women in this society are educated to compete with men.  I have several daughters that have college degrees.  One daughter is married to a man thats older than her.  They have a large painting business in the Bay area. .  My daughter started it and is  responsible for its  activieites and its phenominal growth.  My son in law who is 10 years her senior  is now sick.  He cant use a computer, and has vry little formal education.
They have 2 small children.  He now works only a few hours a day supervising the jobs.  Hes now taken over the cooking, the cleaning, and the management of the children.
I did teach my girls to be housewives.  The society we live in is totally upside down.

  • Not that it makes a difference, is this girl playing flag or tackle football?

Just curious, couldn't find the answer in the article.

    To Matthew and Zeitun:

FIRST: women have to "fight" men every single day of their lives in various ways, Matthew.  Not being female, you aren't aware of this.  Ask your wife.  There are all sorts of "fights": sexism, being oggled in public, lewd remarks, being paid less, being taken less seriously, being too smart for some men, being seen as a physical presence rather than a soul in a physical container...on, and on, and on.

    Zeitun:

SECOND:  How DARE you make such a comment about a twelve year old child!  She "appears masculine already".....AND????  Let's see a photo of YOU, are you a Ben Afleck look alike, a "women stop on the street to look" kinda guy?

There are women who appear more "masculine" than others.  There are reasons for this, biological reasons and, sometimes, even at the chromosomal level.  Are you male or female, hard to tell from your name, but this is an uncharitable remark, at least, and a deprecating remark, at worst.  For shame.

Is this what goes on in this Forum?

Yes, women sometimes have to deal with ogling, etc. especially if they wade out into the World often. But they should avoid men who see them as sex objects. If men are seeing you that way, you're hanging around the wrong places.

But what is "sexism" anyhow? Those who believe in sex? Those who believe that one's sex is part of one's identity? Those who believe in traditional gender roles?

It's too much of a loaded buzzword for me to even discuss. If you want to discuss it, you have to first define that word.

"Being too smart for some men?" How is that a special cross? Some men have to deal with ditzy women. You just move on and look for someone else. No problem. Water seeks its own level; that's how God designed things. Generally speaking a smarter woman needs to find a smarter man to be happy. A married couple should be able to discuss things on the same level, and offer each other intellectually stimulating companionship.

"being paid less" -- there's nothing wrong with that. Women's careers shouldn't be as developed as men's (that's an understatement!) -- they should be focused on bearing and raising children at home. If married, they should be having a lot more than 2 or 3 children, since birth control is forbidden by the Catholic Church.

  • I sense feminism in Daughter of Lourdes?

    Good comment Mathew.

Women are equal, but in a different way. Any attempt to make them equal in every way a man is would be labeled as modern feminism. This would be an attack on the natural order and an affront to Almighty God.
