  • It began at 4.30pm so quite an achievement to mobilise 10,000 people on a Tuesday afternoon/evening.

    by Steven Ertelt | Dublin, Ireland | LifeNews.com | 12/4/12 3:56 PM

Pushing back against the attempt by abortion campaigners to exploit the recent death of a pregnant woman to try to get Ireland to legalize abortions, as many as 10,000 pro-life people joined the Vigil for Life today in Dublin.

Caroline Simons, legal consultant with the Pro Life Campaign said the Irish government was not obliged to legislate for abortion because of the European Court of Human Rights ABC case.

“There is no such obligation,” she said. “All we are supposed to do is clarify our own position in relation to abortion here…We have one of the best maternal mortality rates in the world so abortion is never the answer. It is not going to save mothers lives and we don’t want to see it on our shores.”

The Vigil for Life on Kildare Street was promoted by pro-life groups like the Pro-Life Campaign and Youth Defence to respond to the debate over Savita and hold the Fine Gael party accountable over its pro-life pledge.

“It’s time the pro-life majority were heard. Enda needs to Keep his Pro-Life promise. Say NO to abortion in Ireland,” said Youth Defence in announcing the event. “Fine Gael and Labour are on the verge of legalising abortion. This may be the only chance we get to send a united message to the Government that the people of Ireland do not want abortion.”

“The vigil will be an opportunity to be a voice for both unborn babies and their mothers, and to ask Fine Gael to keep their pro-life promise. If abortion is legalised it will be too late to make your voice heard,” the group added.

As the pictures of the event show, hundreds of Irish people carried signs calling on Fine Gael not to buckle under pro-abortion lobbying pressure.

The event comes on the day following news that the pro-abortion reporter who broke the Savita story says the Indian woman may not have requested an abortion.

The Pro-Life campaign recently commented on Red C abortion poll some are using to press for abortion.

Responding to the Red C poll on abortion to be published in tomorrow’s Sunday Business Post, the Pro Life Campaign said the answers to the different questions are highly contradictory, and show the very high level of public confusion on the issue mainly to do with the distinction between necessary medical interventions in pregnancy and abortion.

The poll reveals that 85% support legislation for the X case, while 63% support a Constitutional amendment limiting the X ruling.

Dr Ruth Cullen of the Pro Life Campaign said:

“We welcome the high level of support for a Constitutional amendment to limit the X case. It is very apparent, however, from the findings overall, that there is huge confusion about the distinction between necessary medical treatments in pregnancy and abortion.

“The Minister for Health and other senior figures in Government bear much of the responsibility for this confusion. For example, they have abjectly failed to highlight the fact that abortion has never been shown to benefit women with mental health problems, indeed on the contrary, peer-reviewed studies show it places some women at greater risk. Given the misunderstandings that have been allowed to fester, it is not at all surprising that the findings appear so contradictory.

“In the coming weeks, as the debate continues, we are confident it will become clear that legislation for the X case would not in fact be restrictive but would involve wide-ranging abortion.”

  • That's a most beautiful picture, John Grace.  It must make you proud to
be Irish.  And everyone can be proud on March 17th,

    Because on St. Patrick's Day,
    "Everyone's Irish."   HAHAHAHA

But seriously, if only the Irish in America could have stirred interest like
this 40 years ago before the sacrament of satan was instituted here on
January 23rd, a date that will live in infamy, and in eternity, et in saecula
    saeculorum.  Amen.

There must have been a lot of pictures.  There are pro-life groups all over
the world that would love to have pictures, lots of pictures, and picture
books, even, of this fine day.

They say "good news doesn't sell" and maybe that's true sometimes,
but I think this would be one of the exceptions.  I hope they come out
with a photo-essay book, and some interviews, some reporters'
questions answered on the streets.  That would be nice.

"If abortion is legalised it will be too late to make your voice heard."

    How true, how true!

You know, this isn't off topic, really, you can check just about any calendar
in America and find that the appellation of "Saint" or at least "St." endures
only on the day of Ireland's patron, St. Patrick.  You could say that he is
the sole survivor of the saints' h0Ɩ0cαųst in the modern world.

There used to be days named for St. Joseph, St. Anthony, St. Stephen,
St. Valentine, and others.  But when the wreckovationists did their dirty
work in 1961, sort of getting the unclean spirit geared up for Vatican II,
all the days with saints' names were remodeled.  The runner-up is
Valentine's Day, but it used to be universally known as Saint Valentine's
Day.  Now it's just Valentine's Day, but it's still Feb. 14th.

Through it all, St. Patrick's Day still shines, still March 17th, and still green.
And through it all, the Irish are still pro-life, and that is really, really good
    news!

God Bless the Irish!    Again, and again!!

  • Ten thousand unite for life: Pro-life vigil against abortion in Dublin

    Quote
More than 10,000 people assemble at Dáil Éireann on Tuesday, December 4th, to stand up for life, and to tell Fine Gael and Enda Kenny to keep their pro-life promise!

Every reality the Fine Gael/Labour government will be gone by the summer of 2013. Enda Kenny, a Catholic will be keen to avoid the label of "Abortion Taoiseach".  At the next general election in Ireland the Labour party will suffer in the election.

For many people and as demonstrated by the recent establishment of Direct Democracy Ireland, people are looking beyond left v right and this party system.

Enda Kenny is a mere puppet for the those that control the finances. He is a traitor that puts the EU first and not the people of Ireland. Since joining the now EU, Ireland and importantly her people have been sold down the river.

Whilst I commend those who attended the vigil a politicians promise is usually just that. They say anything to get elected and particular tend to keep pro-life on a type of reservation.

Indeed though pro-life groups must extend criticism of that Zionist shill for Yankee/Israeli terror in Libya. The killing of the great leader Gaddafi. What happens in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Syria,Iran, Palestine etc etc. She is a stooge for Israel. The Clinton's are rotten.

  • Hollingsworth posted a pertinent piece on IA. Whilst pro-life groups tend to be single issue there is a danger of being kept on the pro-life reservation. E Michael Jones had an article about this in Culture Wars in the past.

Alan Shatter has no loyalty to Ireland or her people. Since he took office there has been several ceremonies of citizenship where immigrants are suddenly 'Irish'. Alan Shatter is doing a good job shattering the Irish people and Nation. He is ordering people to sell their wedding rings if in debt. He is an enemy of the Irish.

He is totally anti-Catholic.  He is no patriot.

As for Ireland and Germany. We have been pro- German always.

Don't expect too much progress on the abortion front in Ireland, as long as you've got Jєωs like Alan Shatter as your Irish Minister of Justice. He could probably care less about abortion in Ireland. He's nonplussed because you Irsh stood by silently as the "h0Ɩ0cαųst" was happening in on the Continent.

  • So that is 1% of the population of Dublin then.  A similar number turned up to protest for Abortion rights two weeks ago.

3 million protestors turned up in 2003 to protest the Iraq War and 2 million in London.

That is more than the entire population of Rome and 20% of the population of London.

God bless em, but 10,000 is not a good figure in a country that will soon have abortion legalised.

The 1967 Abortion Act in Britain is a discussion in itself. For all the lobbying, rallies, marchies, has the act been revoked in any way? Have abortions ceased?

You raise many valid points and hopefully they can be discussed. There are decent folk in England, many SSPX laity, who are fighting for the conversion of England. Abortion, sodomy, immigration, etc etc are all symptoms of a bigger problem facing our countries.

On the point of war, a bit off topic but today I picked up a new book called 'A Christmas Truce Carol'. About the trenches and WWI.

I had a relative, who fought with the British army in World War I.

Well done to those who protested the Iraq War and continue to do so.

  • Shatter won't rule out buying more weapons from Israel

    Be the first to comment
Justice and Defence Minister Alan Shatter has refused to rule out Ireland buying more Israeli weapons – despite continuing controversy over its policy towards Gaza.

Ireland has spent over €14m on Israeli weapons in recent years despite UN claims that it committed war crimes during its previous invasion of Gaza, and the use of Irish passports by Israeli secret service as cover in murder and political assasination.

However, on Wednesday Mr Shatter said that the principle of competitive tendering for Government contracts has to be used by the Department of Defence for the acquisition of defensive equipment.

He told Sean Crowe of Sinn Fein that central to the procedures was the requirement to allow fair competition between suppliers after tenders are advertised on the e-tenders website or the European Defence Agency's electronic bulletin board.

"Such tender competitions are open to any individual company or country in accordance with the terms of all UN, OSCE, and EU arms embargos or restrictions. "There are no such restrictions or embargoes in place on Israel or Israeli companies," Mr Shatter said.

The Israeli arms industry has done well in securing conracts in Ireland.

In one of the more recent successes a company based in Haifa, Elbit Systems Ltd, won a multi-million euro contract to supply surveillance equipment for a new fleet of RG-32M armoured vehicles built in South Africa.

Others included the purchase of a small fleet of Israeli Orbiter unmanned aerial vehicles – spy planes – for €780,000 used by the Army in Chad and by the Army Ranger Wing.

The elite special forces unit also uses the Israeli developed Cornershot, which allows a weapon to be fired around corners.

Another Israeli company, Rabintex Industries Ltd, won a €2.5m competition to supply 12,000 helmets, a success trumpeted in a newsletter from the Israeli embassy in Dublin.

The country also supplied Ireland with an artillery fire control system valued at €1.5m, while two orders were placed with Israeli Military Industries in 2005 for 5.56mm ammunition for the Army's Steyr Aug rifles.

However, after the use of false Irish passports by an assassination squad from Mossad, Israel lost out on multi-million euro contracts to supply more then 20 million bullets to the Defence Forces.

The lucrative series of deals, in one case worth up to €3m for the supply of 10 million bullets in a single tender, instead went to Belgium and other countries.

    Quote
Kenny told 'stitch-up' on X Case will cause revolt

Senior FG figures warn Taoiseach not to rush decision on legislation

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has been warned that if the Government attempts to rush through any "stitch-up'' when it presents its proposed response to legislating for the X Case next week, he will face a major Fine Gael revolt.

The Government is expected to present its response on Tuesday, but Mr Kenny was warned that he will "be seen to be in absolute breach of his word if anything resembling a final solution is presented next week".

And the claim by Eamon Gilmore that he and Mr Kenny would resolve the abortion issue by Christmas has sparked a furious response from senior Fine Gael figures who warned that "the Government must absolutely facilitate an open-ended debate that is respectful of all views'' before it finalises its response to the Ryan report.

They added: "A very significant number of people will not accept a stitch-up. . . as part of some divvy-up to facilitate the wishes of the Labour Party.''

The mood amongst the wing of Fine Gael that is suspicious of any attempt to legislate for ѕυιcιdє will have been hardened by a letter sent to all of the party's representatives by 11 top-level consultant psychiatrists.

The letter was signed by Jacqueline Montwill, consultant psychiatrist for Mayo Mental Health Services; Eugene Breen, CP Mater University Hospital; Alan Byrne, CP Naas; Patricia Casey, professor of psychiatry Mater/UCD; Ciaran Clarke, CP Barringtons Limerick; Brid Corkery, CP St Stephen's Hospital Cork; Brian Houlihan, consultant child psychiatrist at Children's University Hospital Temple St; Richelle Kirrane, CP John Connolly Hospital; Martin Mahon, CP John Connolly Hospital; Bernie McCabe, CP Navan Mental Health Services, and Geraldine Lyster, CP St Brigid's Hospital Louth

Significantly, the letter claims that "termination of pregnancy is not a psychiatric treatment for suicidality, nor is it mentioned as such in any of the major textbooks of psychiatry''.

The letter also expresses the belief that "offering an abortion to a distressed person who is psychiatrically ill would be strongly ill-advised since the person's capacity to make important life decisions is frequently impaired".

Political sources have said that tensions have arisen between Mr Kenny and Justice Minister Alan Shatter over Mr Shatter's response to the Expert Group Report on Abortion which appeared, to many observers, to implicitly endorse the development of a far more liberal abortion regime than the simple outworking of the X Case Supreme Court Judgement.

However, opinion within Fine Gael is so divided over the issue of legislation. Lucinda Creighton has made it clear she will resign if any legislation is too liberal.

Ms Creighton was not available for comment. However, Fine Gael sources also noted that "Shatter is driving every-one mad. He is complaining the X Case is not enough."

Within Fine Gael it is believed that at least 30 TDs and senators remain to be convinced by the virtues of the legislative route. These include Ms Creighton; Derek Keating; Michelle Mulherin; Regina Doherty; John O'Mahony; John Paul Phelan; Brian Walsh; Peter Mathews; party chairperson Charles Flanagan; Terence Flanagan; Billy Timmins; Sean Conlon; Michael Creed; John Deasy; James Bannon; Paul Connaughton, Tony McLoughlin; Jim Daly; Marcella Corcoran Kennedy; Patrick O'Donovan; and a number of senators such as Paul Bradford.

One source noted: "It is not that we are medieval about what women can or cannot do with their bodies. Our concern is about issues such as how do we define ѕυιcιdє and is it the case that we run the risk of following the path of other jurisdictions where this legislation could be used to introduce a UK-style abortion regime though the back door.''

Another source asked: "How do we define regulations for ѕυιcιdєs? Dan Neville, who is the expert on this issue, admitted it is actually impossible to form a conclusion on suicidal ideation.''

TDs were also anxious to clarify that "this is not about being controlled by Opus Dei or priests and nuns waving rosary beads. People have genuine issues of conscience."

  • The 'Irish' Labour party are finished. Whilst the leader and others will probably retire on good pensions at the next election, the party is finished at grass roots level also. Each week there are resignations. Fine Gael are in trouble also. Fianna Fail are gone too.

A very interesting political sphere awaits the Irish in the future.

Faber est quisque fortunae suae. Of course, a Latin scholar like Colm Keaveney will be familiar with the saying from the writings of Appius Claudius Caecus, roughly translating as: "Every man is the architect of his own fortune."

The Galway East TD has decided to shape his fortunes outside the parliamentary party as he can't stand over the social welfare cuts in the Budget.

Mr Keaveney had the conviction to follow through on his expressions of dissatisfaction and walk on a point of principle.

His election as chairman at the Labour conference was widely viewed as a real two-fingered gesture to the party leadership from the grassroots.

He fended off the challenge of candidates regarded as more palatable to the party hierarchy so his election was a sign Labour members want the party's identity to be more strongly promoted within the Coalition.

Mr Keaveney can legitimately argue his mandate comes from the ordinary party members to represent the Labour voice – not the Government's stance.

This is another embarrassing loss for Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore, who has now lost five Labour TDs from the Coalition. Though he won't be shedding many tears.

Mr Keaveney quickly developed a reputation as an outspoken voice and was a thorn in his leader's side.

There may be more to follow. Mr Keaveney's departure really ups the ante for those who have been mouthing off on the Budget – most notably Senator John Whelan.

After such trenchant criticism in the past week of the party he joined a little over two years ago, it's time for the senator to put up and shut up or take the walk to the opposition.

Mr Gilmore fired a broadside at those from his party who have walked away from the Coalition last night.

"We are either shaping the solution, or we are watching it from across the lobby."

Following a difficult day, where Labour had to bite hard and do the previously unthinkable, the party can rightly be resolute after taking such difficult choices. Mr Gilmore could have added: Tu ne cede malis sed contra audentior ito.

"Yield not to misfortunes, but advance all the more boldly against them."
