Has this always been part of the Catholic marriage ceremony? And do the spouses kiss on the mouth? Or is this something that was made up recently?
I ask because i read spouses can only kiss on the mouth in private, so then i thought, well what about the wedding? Or is that the only exception?

It's not in the rubrics.
Where do you read spouses may only kiss in private?

So it wasn't done before?

It's not done now, either. Maybe in the Novus Ordo, but there is no rubric for it according to the traditional nuptial rite.

That mostly makes sense. Thank you. I misread what you posted initially.

So you're saying that all the traditional marriages done right now never have a kiss of the spouses? There is no such "you may kiss the bride"?
Yes, this is all over the Novus Ordo. What a perversion!

If there was, it would have been an ad-lib of the priest's.
I can only speak of the current nuptial rite. I suppose it could have possibly existed under a prior one, but I doubt it.
Is "you may kiss the bride" part of the Novus Ordo rubric?

My wife and I were married by a fairly liberal Novus Ordo priest many years ago. He didn't say, "You may kiss the bride," or anything like that. He just continued with the Novus Ordo Mass after the exchange of vows and rings.
