Outgoing president Rev. Frank Page estimates that only half of Southern Baptist churches will still exist two decades from now.

The decline appears to be particularly acute among young people in the church. In 2005 alone, 55 percent of Southern Baptist churches baptized no youths, according to Ed Stetzer with the North American Mission Board.

    This is good news! :laugh1:

  • Yes, it would be good if the kids were moving UP -- say, to Catholicism.

But to go from being a southern Baptist -- which is a "fundamentalist" religion (one that actually has beliefs, and morals which dictate your everyday life) -- to being a "mainstream Protestant" where religion is just a hobby, is actually a big step down.

Southern Baptists have a lot of the "natural law" correct -- which is more than most generic Protestants in the USA at least. Now it's true that the natural law isn't good enough -- they need to have things SUPERNATURALLY correct as well -- but if they move further away from the truth by becoming atheists, agnostics, pleasure-seekers, etc. it's hardly something to celebrate.

And I fear that's where most of the kids are going -- come on, let's face it: public schools aren't waking up the Southern Baptists to the truth of Catholicism.
