  • Yeah... laugh now, gαy-boy... but you won't need glitter in Hell, cause you'll be as bright as a, glowing red charcoal.

'Glitter Ashes' Available At gαy-Friendly Chicago Churches Wednesday

EDGEWATER — Two North Side churches are going to colorful lengths to ensure all members of their congregations feel loved this Ash Wednesday.

Both Unity Lutheran Church in Edgewater and Berry United Methodist Church in Lincoln Square are taking part in the "Glitter Ash Wednesday" movement, a national campaign aimed at affirming LGBTQ Christians on one of religion's most sacred days, which marks the start of Lent.

The finely-ground glitter/ash mix comes from New York-based organization Parity, a resource for queer people of faith across the LGBTQ spectrum. The substance is made from makeup-grade purple glitter mixed with traditional ashes, which come from burned palm fronds.

The sparkling ash symbol is an "inherently queer sign of Christian belief, blending symbols of mortality and hope, of penance and celebration," according to Parity.

The group says marking foreheads with it is a way for LGBTQ Christians to say, "We are here" as well as others to make a public statement supporting them.

The Rev. April Gutierrez, pastor of Berry United Methodist, 4752 N. Leavitt St., said her church had been looking for more ways to embrace its LGBTQ and queer church members, so it was an easy decision to take part in the glitter movement.

"We're very committed to being a radically inclusive church, and so it was an obvious 'yes,'" said Gutierrez. "I'm really committed to making sure the Lincoln Square community knows there [are] safe spaces for everyone ... to making sure that people feel loved."

On its website, Unity Lutheran, 1212 W. Balmoral Ave., wrote that like love, glitter was "irresistible and irrepressible."

Participants at the two churches will have the option of being blessed with traditional ashes or glitter ashes.

Unity Lutheran Pastor Fred Kinsley will be out at the Berwyn "L" station Wednesday morning from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and will again offer ash blessings at the 1212 W. Balmoral Ave. church's 7:30 p.m. evening service.

Gutierrez also will be out blessing commuters at the Western "L" Brown Line station from 8-10 a.m., followed by a 6:30 p.m. church service at its Leavitt Street location.

"Some preachers will keep silence about the truth, and others will trample it underfoot and deny it. Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Our Lord Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor but a destroyer."  St. Francis of Assisi

  • How about that! Since when did the Lutherans and the Methodists give out ashes?

Any protestant sects that do so are merely aping (trying to mimic) the Catholics, as usual.

Just like the devil apes God, his churches ape God's church (the Catholic Church).

Everything interesting, meaningful, or useful they do or say, they got from us! Meanwhile, everything they do that is specifically Lutheran, specifically Methodist, etc. is completely worthless and often harmful.

Because let's face it -- the devil's version of anything is always a horrible, pathetic, and poor substitute.

They could be in very dire straits and unlike Dire Straits which was forced sometimes to censor their original lyrics, there won't be any censoring on Judgement Day.

  • Since they are not Catholic and dont even believe in Atonement, how can anything they do be meaningful? They can go ahead and put glitter in the ashed and rub their whole body in it, or mix other substances in it and snuff it if that makes them FEEL better. They dont have sacraments so there is no point to any of it! It does NOTHING for their souls! Why do they even have Lent? They are contradicting themselves! Stupid, stupid, stupid!

I think I'm starting to actively hate the homos and all who are sympathetic or even ok with them.
Many people say "For the Honor and Glory of God!" but, what they should say is "For the Love, Glory and Honor of God". - Fr. Paul of Moll

  • They're looking for every way they can to introduce their corruption.

I'm wondering how many so-called Catholic bishops are going to jump into this depraved fad.

Protestants generally deny man's ability to bless anything. They deny the existence of holy water, saying there's no such thing as holy water. They do not practice blessing of articles such as crosses or wedding rings or cars or houses.

Yet I have heard NewAge mystics or mediums suggesting you can get a Protestant minister to bless your house to get rid of haunting spirits. Curiously, they have also said that a shaman can do just as well by smoking the spirits out of your house using a smoldering bundle of sage.

I have yet to find any Protestant minister who says he is willing to come and bless someone's house.

Nonetheless, there are now certain Protestant communities that distribute ashes on Ash Wednesday. I don't know how they prepare the ashes, though, for it would seem to be unlikely that they would have any such ceremony as we do in traditional Catholicism whereby there is a prescribed set of prayers (found in your missal) for the blessing of the ashes, which, by the way, includes using previously blessed holy water. Protestants deny that holy water exists, so how would they bless the ashes with non-existent holy water?

Ironically, this might be the closest these Protestant heretics come to making the sign of the cross!!

  • That reminds me, my mother told me that her parish in California offers "self-serve" ashes.  They left a bowl out in the vestibule with ashes for anyone who couldn't make it to the church services.  Yes of course this is NO parish and of course my mother thought it was a great idea

I expect there will be a drive through window next year.

  • Protestantism, even when conducted with reverence, is a mockery of Our Lord and His Church.  Any Protestant who studies Church history should wonder, if Our Lord said He would always be with us, then why didn't the first Protestant sect start until the early 1500's?
