  • What is the proper difference between the two?

The way I understand it is like this. Say if I went to the beach and the women that happened to be there are inappropriately dressed - remote occasion

    Vs

If I take girls to the beach who are inappropriately dressed - proximate occasion

Just Wondering, sorry for the poor example. I was reading from St Alphonsus that those who have a past of sins of impurity must avoid not only the proximate occasion of sin, but the remote also. So I am trying to get a better grasp on the 2.

  • If you go to the beach knowing it is likely there will be scantily dressed women there, and you are tempted to lust by them, it is a near occasion of sin.  You needn’t supply your own immodest women.

Here’s a better example. If you’re going about your normal activities, go into a store to purchase necessary items, and there’s a possibility of encountering an immodestly dressed woman, that is a remote occasion of sin.  It could also be a near occasion if it’s summer, but it is necessary for you to purchase items, however, you are still permitted in the store without sinning.  The store is generally not a place known for the presence of immodest women, however, the beach is such a place.

This ^ is a much better example!

St. Thomas More said: "A man should go where he's not tempted." That solves the whole problem. Note he did not say to "go where you might be tempted but might not," he said go, hang out, work, or have some recreation where you're not tempted.
"But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men." - Acts 5:29

The Highest Principle in the Church: "We are first of all under obedience to God, and only then under obedience to man" - Fr. Hesse
