  • Hello,

I am part of a schola/choir, and several of our members are missing the Traditional Roman Hymnal. Is there anybody who would be willing to sell their unused copy of this book?

I am offering pay $30 per book plus shipping and handling. However, if you would like to negotiate a higher price, I would be willing to work with you.

    Thanks and God bless!

Are you talking about the Pius X Hymnal, or the St. Basil, or the Gregory?
There were a few others but these were the most commonly used before Vat. II.

Neumann Press reprinted the St. Gregory Hymnal in slightly smaller format around 20 years ago but it's now out of print, again.  You can still find the larger format Complete Editions on the Internet but the price has gone up to around $80.  It would be nice to see a reproduction of the original format with some additional works it conspicuously lacked and missing a few of the useless ones it contained.  But it's not cheap to publish such a book.

Then +Williamson promoted a new book the SSPX and Angelus Press published for a while.  I think they let it go out of print because it contains a nice personal introduction from +W, about whom they want to forget (thus their desire to abandon Winona). I think it's a pretty good book, but last I checked about 5 years ago, it was impossible to order.

This is what he's looking for.
It's called the "Traditional Roman Hymnal".
And, until the SSPX comes up with something new, they're pretty hard to come by since they're out of print.

I would be looking for the book that +Williamson promoted, just like what MaterDominici was saying. It's true they are really hard to come by because they are no longer in print. Last I checked on Amazon they were above $80 per copy. It wouldn't make sense for me to buy 3 or 4 copies at this price, that is why I decided to see if anybody on CI has a few stored away, or better yet, an entire stash.
Mostly everybody except for the newer members on our choir team have a copy. It is a pretty useful book as far as hymnals go. I just wish they would start reprinting or at least come out with a similar book.

  • A year or 2 ago I heard the reason they let this book go out of print is that they are working on producing a new expanded edition.
I forget who the person responsible for it's compilation is but he was in Canada.

  • I am often looking for copies on ebay or amazon for our choir...

They are hard to come across as they are copyrighted, made and still in the domain of the SSPX...

$80 is usually a good price as most times they are about $100 or $150 and sometimes quite a bit more...  There are two on amazon right now, but most other places do not even seem to sell them...

Wow.  Another investment opportunity missed! Imagine if one had ordered a case or two of them when they were still available for $30 a copy new.

    I know!  Right?

I wish they could be found for that cheap...

There are a number of traditional Catholic hymnals.  The St. Gregory and St. Pius X Hymnals are easier to find copies of for sale.  Yet, the "Traditional Roman Hymnal" is a bit harder to come by.  It is primarily Gregorian chant notation with a few hymns in normal notation on the side...
