Title: Looking for computer programmer/web designer
Post by: Stubborn on July 06, 2017, 11:53:23 AM
At least I think that is what I need.

I have looked online but could not locate any site like the site I want. And because potentially substantial revenue is involved, I only want to work with another trad who is also trustworthy.

I need someone who knows how to create an industry specific website and a program that can be incorporated into that website.

For this website, visitors will type multiple items into a box, then the program would search within specific websites on the www and comes up, not with websites aka google, but rather come up with certain, select content from within those certain websites, then display that select content on our website.

I am thinking that at the moment, the program would need to only search within a few dozen specific different sites, but in time, possibly as many as a few hundred different websites, possibly the whole web.

Worldwide, the target audience connected to this industry is currently over 50 million people, within the next few years or so is potentially about a billion people according to google - that is only this one industry.

Anyway, this would be a venture involving minimal upfront costs. I can probably pay for the website, server and perhaps whatever other misc. costs there might be, but plan to get paid if and when this works. But if you know programming and web applications etc., based on the industry, this is great timing to start a website like the one I want - I think it will end up being well worth spending some time on.

If in USA or Canada, PM me if interested, we can exchange numbers to discuss.....I don't know, maybe what I am asking for is either impossible or is already out there someplace that I haven't looked.

You confused me here. It sounds like what you're looking for is an investor (who might or might not be a programmer).

I plan to incur whatever upfront costs there might be so I am not looking for an investor, I am looking for someone who can create a program and a website for that program. The only thing the programmer would invest is a little (or a lot?) of their time. I have no idea how much of their time this will take, but I'm guessing that within a few hours after we talk, they should know how feasible and how many hours of programming this will actually take on their part.

They would not invest any money, they would be compensated same way as me - through our website. I have no idea if this will work or not, but if this works half as well as it could, and I think it will, within a year or two we should both be able to retire in good shape God willing.

I think timing, while not everything, is extremely important - and to do what I want to do with this industry, the timing is excellent right now.

I don't have what you're looking for, but I'm sure you don't mind chatting with me about it as it keeps your inquiry up at the top of the post list. : )

I think you'll broaden your chances of finding what you're looking for by defining it more clearly. I know a few programmers including the one who lives here, but only a small percentage of them are willing to take on a job -- no matter how small or large -- only on the prospect of future income. Trust me, there are a solid number of people out there with good ideas who only need a free programmer to implement them.

On the other hand, if you ask for someone with money to invest in a good idea, you broaden your scope of possible contributors. You might mention that someone with the appropriate talent (programming) could do the work rather than invest the money, but it still takes their free time which most people -- and a disproportionate number of Trads -- don't have in large supply.

To put your project in prospective, I'd estimate that the amount of resources needed to write your program/website would be at least 5x more than the amount needed to purchase a server to run the program. And, that presumes you even need your own server. If you only need hosting, that "up front cost" would be even less.

As a comparison:
The last server we purchased : $1,200 not including labor to assemble it
A recent "good idea" Matthew programmed for someone else : $1,300 (This was a much more basic program than what you're describing.)

Here's another example for you --
A few months back, Matthew did some work for a group of guys with a "good idea". (These jobs always include non-disclosure agreements, so I can't tell you about their good ideas.) The idea was almost 100% programming with only a minimal amount of money needed for cloud hosting, etc. and the guys (3 of them, I believe) were all programmers themselves. (They also had some money to hire help for their idea, which is why Matthew did a part of the project.) The problem is that each of these programmers have full-time jobs and lives of their own, so while the cash they had available gave them a push, their project creeps along and has yet to be released 6 months later. None of them can afford to stop doing paid work long enough to complete their project no matter how much potential they think it has to make future money.

TL;DR: A programmer who can afford to do work on the possibility of future income is an investor. It would be easier to sell you idea to someone with resources to invest and then hire a programmer.

Yep, I completely understand everything you are saying and I agree the best thing would be to hire someone and pay them for their work, then be done with them, this is exactly what I am trying to avoid because I have no idea what it takes but I know the expenses can and often do just keep going up.

I did something similar for an account I was working on a year or two back, but then, I needed a program for something much different, yet I thought it was some major project that would take a programmer a few months working full time to complete - the guy I used at that time seemed like he might have spent all of three or four hours on it in his spare time, and he had it done completely and even much better than I had hoped -  for which I paid him and that was that.

I am thinking this might be a bit more involved, but here again, I don't have any idea what all is involved. If it works like last time, the whole thing might only take 10 hours of a programmers time - obviously I would be willing to pay for that, and probably even more, but then how is that going to look when I'm raking in booko bucks, mean while the programmer is still slaving away working for a living LOL.

Anyway, it really is a great idea, whether it pays off or not - there's only one way to find out.  :laugh1:

Did you ever find the right gut for this project.
If not, I have a cousin who does this sort of thing for a living.
