  • I have an old prayer book from 1874 called "The New Manual of the Sacred Heart" by Desclee Lefebvre & Co, Tournai Belgium.

This book contains many long forgotten devotions to the Sacred Heart of Jesus that I've never seen reproduced in any other prayer book devoted to the Sacred Heart.

It has just been reproduced and I highly recommend it to anyone who is devoted to the Sacred Heart.

  • I have that, albeit 1898, one that was published by Cornelius Bull of 21, Suffolk St., Dublin, a furniture maker. Quite a few of the pews in the diocesan church where an older priest offers Low Mass were made by them. It has different ways of devoutly hearing Mass, including when receiving Communion, but no ordinary of the Mass like most older devotional manuals. It has have Epistle and Gospels of Sunday, alongside the methods for hearing Mass. It has fine devotions like the Office of the Sacred Heart, Seven Day Devotion to the Sacred Heart, the usual Sunday Vespers, Antiphon of the Blessed Virgin, many devotions for Confession and Communion, an explanation of the Apostleship of Prayer and Association of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

  • I have a copy of that. It is absolutely essential to anyone who is devoted to the Sacred Heart. Unfortunately, due to the size and binding of the book, it starts to deteriorate pretty quickly. I had to tape it up about a month after using it daily.
"Be not therefore solicitous for tomorrow; for the morrow will be solicitous for itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof." [Matt. 6:34]

"In all thy works remember thy last end, and thou shalt never sin." [Ecclus. 7:40]

"A holy man continueth in wisdom as the sun: but a fool is changed as the moon." [Ecclus. 27:12]

Is your copy old or is it the reprint?

It's the reprint from the link you posted. It's a nice pocket size, but I won't lie that the binding quality of the little book is abysmal.

  • I agree the binding from this company is not good.  I've purchased Behold Thy Mother from them thinking I could distribute them to friends as originals are running upward of $80 US and was disappointed with the quality.
It's amazing that paperbacks from 1890 still hold together but today's quality is sub standard.

Regardless, the contents of the book are more than worth the money.

Absolutely. If I have the time, I may see about reformatting the text for Lulu or something. The quality of their books are decent.

  • Someone could also keep an eye on Abebooks or Ebay or Etsy (also has old books, coins). Even if an old copy has nothing more than the sort of temporary softback books got before binding, the can be more solid. Mine is hardback (one board a bit loose) with sewn binding.
