Feastday of St. Martin of Tours, uncle of Saint Patrick

Catholic Online: As disciples came to Martin for direction, he founded a monastery for them called Ligug‚. It was there he performed the first of many miracles. When a catechumen died before baptism, Martin laid himself over the body and after several hours the man came back to life. Sulpicius also had talked to this man who was baptized immediately but lived many years after that. Martin remained in this monastery near his teacher and friend until after Hilary died. If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

  • Could just be that he didn't actually desire Baptism well enough to be saved.

  • Yeah, either there was a purpose for raising him (miracles are always good) or perhaps he died as a catechumen who didn't desire to be baptized. I don't think that the Church teaches all catechumens are in a position to receive a BOD, only that they are able to.

This story is not a proof that BOD is contrary to Catholic teaching.
