Chastellain, whose courage equaled that of de Brebeuf, stole or broke his way into cabins where he had hope of baptizing some soul. Once, while he was pouring the water on the heads of two dying children, a young brave leaped up roaring blasphemies against the French God. Chastellain answered him fearlessly.

In the conferences which the missioners held during the summer and the early autumn, they assessed the results of their labors. In the course of the past winter, they calculated thay they spoke to about 10,000 Hurons and Petuns, baptized about 1,000 persons, of whom 460 were under fourteen years of age, and though they had won about twenty adults in good health, they had lost more through apostasy. In all the Huron land, there were not more than fifty who still professed to be Believers or who could be salvaged.

At Khioetoa, to which they gave the name of St. Michel, they were most cordially welcomed. Some of the Wenrohronons who had migrated in 1639 to the Hurons and had later gone back, remembered with gratitude the kindness of Echon in their hunger and sickness. De Brebeuf was surprised that they had carried with them so great a remembrance of what he had taught them about God. During the few days he remained there, he instructed them further and baptized a few sick children and some lingering old people.
