The above links are the two talks which Mike Malone gave at the St. Joseph Conference at South Bend probably twenty-five years ago.  The man was a real scholar.  He wrote about fifty books, most of which cannot be found at all.  He authored the volume, The Catholic Digest, but his most well known work is The Only Begotten, a very well researched volume.  Mike was in the room in 1972 when Fr. Feeney had the excommunication lifted.  Fr. Feeney recited the Athanasian Creed in Greek. Mike died of cancer in a Texas hospital right before The Only Begotten went to press. I called him on the phone and talked to him a couple of days before he died.  I remember him telling me that one of his Protestant doctors converted because Mike told him, "If you do not become a Catholic, you will go to hell."  Mike and I laughed on the phone. I thanked him for his scholarship, and told him that we would meet in heaven should we be so fortunate.

This book which I have posted is a very rare, small volume which I think I purchased at the conference.

Post Scriptum - These talks I found to be excellent, and should you not listen to them, the loss is yours.

  • His "Apostolic Digest" is one of the worst books to ever be compiled by any traditionalist. He confessed in the preface to being unable to actually source many of the quotes in it, stating that the book itself was largely transcribed from his own hand-written notes (this alone should disqualify the book from being described as "scholarly".

His citation schema is proprietary and cryptographic, needlessly so. Many quotes are fraudulent or mis-cited.  I object somewhat strongly to describing him as a "scholar", unless one means to describe him as a terrible scholar.

ETA: I only mean to criticize the man's scholarship. I don't doubt that he made a good or loyal friend.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • I read his Only Begotten years ago and there are almost 1,000 footnotes in the book; I was impressed with the read, but that was twenty years ago.  The man quotes Migne in his talks.  To be honest I have the Catholic Digest but have only perused it. Much of the Digest as I recall are quotes from the saints.  I always consult the traditional copies of Denzinger if I need to.  Mike realized at the age of 10 that he needed to become Catholic.  He must have some wits about him.  He took seriously the dogma Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus, which is more than I can say for a great number of traditional Catholics.  I remember he said in his talk that Fr. Feeney converted nearly 100 Jews and that he had personally verified all of the stories.  He was either not telling the truth or embellishing, but I have no reason to disbelieve him.
