  • The followers of Feeney insist that there is no salvation apart from water.  This is a novel teaching which counters that which was consistently taught by all who spoke to the issue.  The 21st century laypeople who follow feeney come to a conclusion first - no salvation apart from water, and then base everything upon that.  If Bellarmine and Alphonsus disagree too bad.  Must not be true, because Feeney you know.  They start with a false premise and do all the can to support it with backward reasoning.

The Catholic theological method is deductive, not inductive: We begin with general principles and then apply them to particular cases, as Pope Pius XII makes clear in the above quote. A pretty good explanation and illustration of the difference between the two methods can be found in an article by John Vennari on the “psychotic synod” of 2014.
"I receive Thee, redeeming Prince of my soul. Out of love for Thee have I studied, watched through many nights, and exerted myself: Thee did I preach and teach. I have never said aught against Thee. Nor do I persist stubbornly in my views. If I have ever expressed myself erroneously on this Sacrament, I submit to the judgement of the Holy Roman Church, in obedience of which I now part from this world." Saint Thomas Aquinas the greatest Doctor of the Church

  • It depends on the quote.  Who made the quote.  Under what circuмstance and authority?  Was he authorized to teach in the name of the Church?  Does he teach the common opinion of the moral majority of theologians on an issue?  Was it something the Pope approved?  Was it in an encyclical and put in the acta?

Was it a sainted Doctor of the Church?

For instance if two Sainted doctors of the Church along with all the theologians, and the Popes after the Council of Trent taught BOD.  What are we to think?  The question is rhetorical, but not for the feeneyites.
    Well Torn?

  • I'm not wading through that.
Not so much "what", as "why"?

Again, not playing shrink here, just things to note if you care to. You seem like a pretty savvy cat. I hate spelling things out because that's just more bias.

On the other hand, there is the power of suggestion, but I figure you'll weigh what you read, and not assume either way.

The "what" is pretty revealing as well, but I'm with you; frankly, it's tiresome.

    Quote
Jesus answered: Amen, amen I say to thee, unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Not ALL who spoke on the issue.  A novel teaching indeed!

  • Jesus said water AND the Holy Ghost.  Not water OR the Holy Ghost.  BOD is baptism without water, therefore it's not baptism.  Therefore, it cannot save.
